Wreaths on the head of satin ribbons. DIY Ukrainian wreath in a couple of hours. Stages of creating a kanzashi wreath

Currently, the Ukrainian wreath of satin ribbons on the head has become a popular decoration element. You can buy it, make it from fresh or artificial flowers, or make it yourself by making each flower and then putting it together as you like.

I bring to your attention a step-by-step master class on creating a wreath and headband with flowers from satin ribbons in the Ukrainian style.

DIY Ukrainian wreath made of satin ribbons

The main flower for the wreath is the poppy. Red poppies mean youth, beauty and their transience. A wreath of red flowers is a symbol of girlish purity and beauty.

Periwinkle is a symbol of purity and innocence, and blooming periwinkle is a declaration of love. Cornflowers are a symbol of girlish modesty and tenderness. Symbol of fidelity and devotion. Chamomiles awaken love. Viburnum - ancestral protection.

Three ways to create a poppy from satin ribbons

The poppy flower can be made in three different ways. Each of them has its own advantages, and only you can choose which method to prefer.

Poppy from a whole piece of narrow ribbon

  1. Make 6 marks on the tape at a distance of 8-10 cm from each other. Don't forget to leave 0.5 cm from the edge.
  2. Sweep 6 petals along the marks.
  3. Pull the thread and form petals. Connect the ends of the ribbon and sew to make a flower.
  4. Insert stamens or beads into the middle of the flower. (I decided not to make a poppy box, but simply added a bead along with the stamens)

Poppy from pieces of ribbon

  1. Cut the ribbon into 4-5 cm pieces, depending on the desired size of the flower.
  2. On one side, cut each segment into a semicircle and melt it over a candle.
  3. On the other hand, you can collect the folds and also melt them over a candle.
  4. Collect the resulting petals into two flowers.
  5. Then glue the resulting flowers and add the stamens.

Poppies made from figured petals

This poppy can be used in Ukrainian wreaths, hairpins or for braided ribbons.

  1. From a ribbon 5 cm wide, cut into 10 pieces of 3.5 - 4.5 cm, depending on the size of the flower you want to get.
  2. Cut a petal from each piece and make several small cuts along the rounded edge.
  3. During the process of melting the edges, these cuts will bend in different directions and create the desired effect of a living flower.
  4. Gather the petals on a string of 5 pieces and glue them together.
  5. Add the middle. It can be made traditional or simply from black stamens.

You can also make a ribbon into a braid and decorate children's braids.

Stylized poppy center

Depending on where the poppy will be used, the center for it can be made in the traditional style - in the form of a box, you can use only the stamens. I make stylized poppy centers for wreaths.

  • For the middle, take a piece of narrow green ribbon 18 cm and twist it into a rope.
  • Then glue it onto a piece of felt, starting from the knot, and twist it into a “shell”.
  • When the glue dries, cut out the “Shell” and glue the stamens on the felt side.

  • Glue the finished center into the flower blank.

Chamomile from a narrow ribbon

To make chamomile, it is better to use a ribbon 1 – 1.25 cm wide.

  1. Cut 9 pieces of ribbon 7 cm long.
  2. Bend each segment into a corner, bend the bottom in half with the front side inward and melt over the fire, forming a petal. One chamomile requires 9 petals.
  3. Gather the petals on a thread, pull and sew.
  4. Glue or sew on the middle in the form of a bead or button.

Depending on the size of the wreath, sometimes smaller flowers are needed. Therefore, you can make chamomile smaller and in a simpler way.

  1. Cut 2.5 cm pieces from a narrow 1.2 cm strip.
  2. Melt the cut edges over the fire so as to form a petal on one side. For one flower you need 9-12 petals.
  3. For the middle, a regular knot is used.
  4. Gather the petals on a thread and pull them tightly, glue a knot in the middle.

Narrow ribbon calendula

Calendula or sunflower, as you like, are made from a ribbon the same width as a chamomile. The only difference is in the way the petal is folded.

Instead of calendula, you can use small yellow flowers.

Cornflower from ribbon

I make cornflowers from a 2.5 cm wide ribbon. This is the easiest way to create a flower that I found on the net.

  1. For one flower you will need 6 pieces of 3 cm each. Melt the cut edges over a fire.
  2. Forming a petal. Fold the piece of tape diagonally so that the corners do not touch.
  3. Then arbitrarily bend the right corner up and the left corner down so that they peek out slightly.
  4. The sharp corner where the fold needs to be heated a little over the fire and held with your fingers to form a fan-shaped petal.
  5. Then collect the resulting petals on a thread and pull them together.
  6. Insert blue stamens into the middle and glue.

So, all the flowers are prepared, you can start. For decoration, you can add green leaves, kalinka or beads and other decorations that you have.

Making a Ukrainian wreath with your own hands

Assembling a wreath on a wire base

The traditional Ukrainian wreath is characterized by the presence of a large number of ribbons. To be able to attach ribbons, we will make a wreath on a wire base. For this we use thick and soft wire.

  1. The size of the wire base should be slightly smaller than the circumference of the head. but not less than 40 cm.
  2. Braid the ends of the wire with a narrow or tape tape and make loops.
  3. Then glue the wire to a 2.5 cm piece of tape on which the flowers will be attached.
  4. Prepare a diagram according to which the flowers will be attached.
  5. First you need to glue the poppies, they are the largest. Don't glue them too close to the loops.
  6. We glue the remaining, smaller flowers and leaves evenly and symmetrically between the poppies.
  7. When the glue has hardened, check that all the flowers are glued and that there is no visible wire between them.
  8. That's it, all that remains is to thread the ribbon through the loops and tie.

Ukrainian wreath with flowers made of satin ribbons is ready.

Headband in Ukrainian style with flowers made from ribbons

This hairband can be worn almost every day. I prefer metal rims as they are stronger and more reliable. But. if you wish, you can increase the number of flowers and make a Ukrainian wreath.

If you wish, you can braid the headband with ribbons, like mine. There are many different videos on how to do this. I won't go into detail.

You need to glue the bases for the composition onto the rim. I prefer felt, but you can use wide ribbon folded in half. Assembling the composition is the most difficult and most interesting process. You must calculate the composition so that all the prepared flowers fit and there is no free space left on the base. If suddenly there are any empty spaces left, they are filled with leaves or decor.

And if you want to play it safe, you can first stick leaves on the base, and only then add flowers and decor.

Show your imagination and you will get different versions of Ukrainian handmade flower wreaths.

If you are just starting out, I recommend using “Dragon” glue in your work. It does not dry as quickly and you will have the opportunity to correct your mistakes.

I wish you success in your creativity.

Selecting herbs and flowers for the wreath

Do you know, my friend, that a wreath should consist of no more than 12 flowers ? Usually the wreath was made not too lush so that it fits neatly to the head.

Since ancient times, a wreath has been the book of a young girl’s soul: in the language of flowers she expressed her feelings, state of mind and talked about the events that happened in her life.

Symbolic flowers that are traditionally woven into a wreath:

  • poppy - a flower of desires, a symbol of fertility, beauty and youth;
  • cherry and apple blossom - maternal love and devotion;
  • chamomile is a symbol of tenderness, fidelity and love;
  • sunflower is a symbol of devotion and fidelity;
  • mint - protects the child and his health;
  • cornflowers are a symbol of humanity;
  • rose, mallow and peony - symbols of faith, hope, love;
  • oregano is a symbol of maternal love;
  • viburnum - beauty and maiden beauty;
  • lily - girlish charms, purity, chastity;
  • elecampane - the root of nine forces, which strengthens and restores health;
  • immortelle - a symbol of health, heals ulcers and wounds;
  • hops - flexibility and intelligence;
  • The field bell is a symbol of gratitude.

wormwood , the main herb, was woven into it, sweet , a symbol of fidelity, and oak leaves, a symbol of courage and strength. However, the most reliable amulet was and remains periwinkle , symbolizing the immortality of the human soul, a potion of love and maiden beauty.

There were rumors that as soon as a boy and a girl ate a periwinkle leaf, passionate love would suddenly break out between them.

But “unclean” potions - wolfberries, ferns, dope - were strictly forbidden to be woven into a wreath. The presence of children during wreath weaving was also considered unacceptable.

In the autumn, when the grasses had faded, wreaths were woven from golden leaves, and in winter - from artificial or wax flowers. The latter were woven mainly by nuns at monasteries and sold in Kyiv markets. It was customary to buy artificial wreaths on the eve of marriage as wedding wreaths. Sometimes the flowers in such a wreath were intertwined with green periwinkle and bird feathers were added.

Features of weaving Ukrainian wreaths and a little history

The Ukrainian wreath is a wonderful decoration for any age.
From time immemorial, a wreath in Ukraine has been not only a national decoration. There is still a belief that the wreaths woven by girls with their own hands contained a great and mystical amulet power. In addition to the incredible natural beauty contained in such an unusual decoration, each of its elements could tell a lot without words: the marital status, character, feelings of the Ukrainian beauty. Today, a woven wreath on the head is not only one of the symbols of Ukraine, but an incredibly stylish modern accessory.

History of the wreath

Since time immemorial, the inhabitants of Ukraine have not only loved, but also revered and had the utmost respect, believing in their mysterious power to protect and bring good luck. Clothes were decorated with incredible floral patterns, Ukrainian huts were painted, towels and tablecloths were embroidered.

Girls mastered the art of weaving a wreath at an early age. This was one of the ways not only to decorate your appearance, but also to show skill, creativity, diligence and hard work. It would seem that a wreath on the head has always existed in Ukraine.

It is not known for certain who invented such a tradition and when, but everyone will definitely agree that this art is worthy of living forever.

The Ukrainian wreath can be seen in many paintings of past years

Weaving a wreath is a whole science that has been passed down from generation to generation. The traditional Ukrainian wreath consisted of 12 flowers.

Ukrainian girls, decorating themselves with a wreath, emphasized tenderness, femininity, youth and purity.

It was believed that a wreath of flowers on the head had magical powers that helped relieve pain, attract love and prosperity, and protect envious people and even evil spirits from the evil eye.

Wreath and symbolism

Ukrainian head wreaths and weaving them were not just fun. Knowing the meaning of a particular flower, one could read it like an open book. The choice of one flower or another depended on the beauty’s age, status, and even on the purpose for which the wreath was woven. Each flower carried its own special symbolism:

People believed that flowers are gifts from God, and the true gift of nature must be treated with respect. The combination of certain colors could tell a lot without words.

The meaning of flowers in the Ukrainian wreath

More than 70 variations of weaving were known in Ukraine, among them ritual, ceremonial, magical and many other wreaths. By the way, my mother wove the first wreath on her daughter’s head when she was three years old, always weaving in chamomile as a symbol of a clear mind and pure thoughts.

Traditions

There are many ancient traditions associated with a wreath of flowers on the head, some of which have survived to this day.

For example, in ancient times, a girl presented a wreath woven with her own hands to her beloved as a sign of matchmaking and fidelity. Today this tradition has grown into the exchange of rings between newlyweds.

Today the bride throws a bouquet to her unmarried bridesmaids at a wedding, but previously it was a wreath that was thrown; whoever catches it will be the first to get married.

The wreath played an important role in the relationship between a guy and a girl

Often in a Ukrainian village one could see a wreath on the doors of a hut; it was believed that for a whole year it protected the whole family from evil and troubles, and also brought health to the house. In ancient times, there were many variations of wreaths. One of the most popular was considered a wreath of devotion; it was based on cornflower and lovage. By the way, the color combination in this wreath is blue cornflower and yellow lovage.

The wreath was given one of the key roles on the holiday of Ivan Kupala

Ribbons in a Ukrainian wreath

In addition to flowers, the Ukrainian wreath was always decorated with multi-colored satin ribbons. Moreover, the choice of one color or another was not random; there were strict traditions. From an early age, girls learned the art of weaving ribbons correctly and understanding what a particular color means.

Plus, the ribbons perfectly complement the appearance of the wreath.

The girls wove the first ribbon in the middle of the wreath. It was always light brown in color, which personified the fertile nurse-earth. Yellow ribbons were woven on both sides of the first - the personification of the sun and warmth.

Behind them were woven bright green ones, which were a symbol of girlish youth and beauty, and followed by blue ribbons - the personification of a clear sky. It was believed that they gave vitality and health to the girl.

After the blue ones, purple ribbons were woven in - the personification of wisdom, pink and crimson, symbolizing wealth and sincerity.

The meaning of ribbons in the Ukrainian wreath

There is a belief that the ribbons were supposed to protect against the evil eye. The length of the ribbons in the head wreath should not be arbitrary, but measured strictly according to the length of the girl’s braid. If a girl wove a blue ribbon, it meant that she was an orphan. People treated the girl with bread, welcomed her in every possible way and tried to show her gifts.

In modern wreaths, ribbons play rather a decorative role.

How to weave a wreath?

Today, the art of weaving a Ukrainian wreath with your own hands is gaining popularity again. Modern accessories in the form of a colorful wreath are incredibly popular not only in Ukraine.

In order not to spend a lot of money on designer items, you can create an exclusive item yourself. This decoration is an excellent solution not only for theme parties, weddings or national holidays.

A colorful Ukrainian wreath can make everyday life colorful, joyful and bright. You can weave a wreath in different ways.

Previously, creating a wreath was a kind of ritual, and the process itself had a lot of nuances

Method No. 1

To make such an accessory with your own hands, you will need:

  • thin but strong wire;
  • set of artificial flowers;
  • multi-colored ribbons;
  • scissors.

You can make a very beautiful wreath yourself

Using wire, you make a frame for the wreath; you can weave it in the form of a braid from three pieces of wire. Next, artificial flowers made of paper, foamiran or fabric are fixed to the frame by gluing and then wrapping with ribbons. In the summer, you can use fresh flowers, so the wreath will look especially natural and gentle.

Weaving rules

Weaving a wreath is an entire art that Ukrainian girls have learned since childhood. The mother put the very first wreath on the girl’s head when she was three years old. Every year the amulet was updated, new elements were added. Traditionally, the wreath consists of twelve types of flowers. Each flower not only occupied its place, but had a certain meaning. Thus, immortelle stood guard over health, chamomile symbolized innocence, cornflower spoke of fidelity, viburnum served as a symbol of beauty. There are about seventy options for creating wreaths. They were woven for good luck, against the evil eye, to attract the opposite sex, for various rituals.

Any wreath looks more colorful and picturesque with ribbons. The Ukrainian wreath necessarily involved weaving ribbons in a strict color sequence. Each tape had a specific purpose. Let's consider their interpretation:

  • started weaving from the middle. The first ribbon served as a symbol of Mother Earth and corresponded to the color brown;
  • stripes of a yellow tint were added along the edges of the first ribbon, personifying the warm sun;
  • then there were green stripes, talking about the beauty and young age of the hostess;
  • blue symbolized clear sky, living water;
  • purple ribbons symbolized prudence;
  • pink meant the sincerity and unfeignedness of a virgin.

DIY Ukrainian wreath

In the old days, a wreath of flowers was a mandatory attribute of the elegant costume of young Ukrainian and Russian girls living in the southern regions. Folk traditions are being revived. A bright wreath can serve as a decoration for the bride and her bridesmaids at a folk style wedding, and, of course, decorate a girl’s head when its owner performs at a concert or matinee. We suggest making a Ukrainian wreath with your own hands. The master class contains detailed instructions on how to make a Ukrainian wreath.

You will need:

  • plastic bottle;
  • wide elastic band;
  • green silk or satin fabric;
  • glue gun;
  • sewing supplies;
  • ready-made (or self-made) flowers.

Manufacturing

  1. We cut out a symmetrical base from a plastic bottle.
  2. From green fabric folded in half, cut out a similar shape, adding 0.8 - 1.0 cm to the seam allowance.
  3. We sew the fabric folded in half, right side inward, leaving the area unsewn. We turn the sewn workpiece inside out, then carefully, so as not to tear the fabric, insert the plastic base into it.
  4. Using a blind stitch, carefully sew up the remaining part.
  5. We take a wide elastic band, cut off the necessary part from it, correlating the size of the elastic band with the circumference of the head. Apply glue to the edges of the elastic band.
  6. Glue both ends of the elastic on the front side.
  7. Using a glue gun, glue the flowers onto the front side. If you master the art of kanzashi, you can decorate a Ukrainian wreath with flowers you made yourself.
  8. The reverse side of the product should also be carefully processed.

According to tradition, the Ukrainian wreath is worn with ribbons, the length of which should be equal to the length of the hair. You can decorate the back of your product with multi-colored silk ribbons. The ribbons are sewn on by folding them around the elastic. A wreath with a wide elastic band is convenient, as it does not put pressure on the head and rests securely on the head while dancing.

You can also make an element of the Russian national costume with your own hands - kokoshnik.

DIY Ukrainian wreath

For any holiday or just on summer days, you can make a special wreath that will decorate your head with its bright flowers. Ukrainian is considered one of the best types of wreaths, since you can use different materials to create it. To make it yourself, you need to find out what tools and auxiliary items are needed.

What can you make a Ukrainian wreath from with your own hands?

The most authentic Ukrainian wreaths are made from fresh flowers, but it is worth noting that such decorations will not last long.

For a wreath, different flowers can be used, ranging from wild ones to aquatic ones. But for an artificial wreath, you can make flowers with your own hands.

In order to make a wreath that will serve you for a long time, you need to choose a material from which you can make flowers yourself.

A wreath can be made on the head, but it can also be made on the hand, depending on the desire and the occasion for which this decoration is needed. There are wreaths made from artificial flowers on sale, but many people don’t like them. Therefore, the option of making a wreath yourself may seem more successful than buying a ready-made one.

A hand wreath should be small in size, but at the same time have all the components that a large wreath has. For example, the most important role in a wreath is played by a poppy or sunflower, so they need to be reproduced from fabric in a small size.

But a regular wreath will take a lot of time, since creating flowers is a labor-intensive and lengthy process.

The most beautiful artificial wreath is considered to be the one made from satin ribbons. We can agree that satin ribbons are quite bright and lend themselves well to sewing, so making flowers from them will be easy. Ribbons can be used in different colors, but their size should be large so that it is enough for all elements of the floral decoration.

Each flower used in the wreath symbolizes something very important, for example, the cornflower is a symbol of youth and beauty, and the red poppy is a symbol of strong feelings. Therefore, all 12 colors that are used in the wreath are woven into it for a reason. By wearing such a wreath on the night of Ivan Kupala, a girl calls upon herself all the best feelings and emotions.

Very often, Ukrainian wreaths are used at matinees or holidays in the garden or school. Therefore, the wreath is more popular for children than for adults. It must be remembered that when making a wreath, all parameters of the head are taken into account. This is especially true for wreaths on a hoop, since to make a children's wreath you will need a small hoop, and for an adult - a larger one.

After watching one master class, it will become clear what the technique of making a wreath is. And then wreaths can be made without any prompts. And most likely, some girls will understand that creating your own artificial wreath is much simpler than combining fresh flowers into such a decoration.

The Ukrainian wreath can be of different sizes, so the flowers for it can be both large and small. But since the flowers will be attached to the hoop, they should be small in size. Satin flowers are always made the same way, only the colors of the ribbons and the size of the flowers differ.

Red poppy

A red poppy can be made from one strip of satin. To do this you will need a red ribbon about 5 cm wide and 60 cm long. Along the entire length you need to sew with thread at a distance of 10 cm from each other, then tighten the thread. The stamens are glued into the middle of the poppy, with beads at the ends.

White chamomile

Next, it will be easiest to make a chamomile; for this you will have to take a ribbon 1.5 cm wide and cut 9-11 pieces.

Each piece of tape must be bent into a corner so that the edges touch and a small gap is formed in the middle. You need to melt the ends a little over the fire so that they stick together.

In total, you will need 9-11 petals, which are eventually sewn together with thread and pulled into a circle, and a yellow bead is glued to the center.

By holding each flower petal on the fire, a more natural curve of the petal is formed, and the flower will have a natural appearance.

The calendula flower is made according to the principle of chamomile, but the shape of the petals is different.

So, to create a calendula you need a yellow ribbon, the size of each petal should be no more than 1 cm, and after folding each piece in half, you need to bend the edges on top to form a triangle, and at the end of the petal you need to twist the edges a little and hold it over the fire so that the petals become natural curve. Having collected all the petals in a circle, you can glue the stamens to the center.

In principle, each flower for a wreath is made using the same technique, only the kanzashi wreath differs in the size of its flowers; for it you need to make large and voluminous flowers.

In order to see how to make such a wreath and what it looks like, you can look at the photo.

Each wreath will look beautiful with ribbons that simply hang down, the main thing is that thin ribbons are used for a small wreath, and wide ones for a large one.

History of the Ukrainian wreath. Ancient Slavic wreath

Sung in songs and shrouded in legends, the Ukrainian wreath has a centuries-old history. It was first mentioned during the Sumerian culture - XII-III centuries. BC e.

The descendants of the Sumerians, representatives of the Corded Ware culture, left many symbols for future generations, including the mythical sign of the goddess Inanna - Ishtar , which means “clear sky”. It consists of a wreath - a circle and a ribbon woven into it, creating two ends, as well as a star with six rays in the center.

It is interesting that the same sign is depicted on the sarcophagus of Yaroslav the Wise in Sophia of Kiev (XII century). Researchers believe that the Ukrainian wreath is a simplified sign of Inanna, as if the wishes of a peaceful, clear sky above the head of the one who wears it are a talisman against evil forces and misfortunes.

During Antiquity, a wreath was considered a symbol of happiness and talent. It was used to decorate winners, it was worn by speakers during speeches, and sacred objects were decorated with it. The wreath was also a symbol of grief.

Our ancestors knew that the main part of a person’s body, with which he understands the world and influences it, is the head, so they created amulets for it, which protected it from damage and evil spells. It is not surprising that in ancient images of the female goddess she wears a headdress made of flowers, herbs, potions and branches.

It is interesting that in different regions of Ukraine the wreath was called differently: in Podolia - korobulya, lubok, in the Chernihiv region - teremok, in the Hutsul region - pletin, in the Pereyaslav region - gibalka... There were also common Slavic names - wreath, vyanka, bandaging, chiltse.

Decor

The degree of difficulty of preparation largely depends on the meeting location. If this is a cafe/restaurant of Slavic cuisine (which one does not play a big role), introducing national flavor into a suitable interior is quite simple. In the courtyard of a private house or in nature, a few bright details are enough, because... nothing distracts from the topic.

In a modern apartment it is more difficult to organize a Ukrainian party with your own hands, but it is also possible if you approach the implementation of ideas creatively . Hundreds of MKs from the network, simple materials and time, which will take quite a lot to decorate a Ukrainian party, will help. We offer ideas:

  • The stove is the main attribute of the hut; it is with it that you should start transforming the room . Cut out a silhouette from white cardboard and paint it with bright bird flowers (the patterns are very simple, a child can do it). From the same cardboard, the grip, the pots - all together with the stove to the free wall. You will get a bright decoration and a gorgeous photo zone;

National ornament – tablecloths, bedspreads, towels, napkins, sofa cushions. And also grandma’s striped rugs. Ethnic patterns instantly transform the interior, indicating a given direction.

  • Be sure to hang a horseshoe at the entrance. Decorate the walls with wreaths, bast shoes, and village landscapes . Place them on shelves and make mini-scenes of dolls in national costumes (rag, straw). Find a secluded but visible place for the colorful brownie. All these attributes of a Ukrainian party are easy to make with your own hands;
  • a wattle fence of twigs along one wall, with a hut with a thatched roof painted in the background . You can cut out a goat from cardboard, place buckets next to it, hang fake jars and other symbolic attributes. If there is little space, a few miniature fragments of a fence will suffice;

  • At a Ukrainian-style party, you can't do without the gifts of nature . Apples and other fruits in baskets, vegetables in buckets, garlands of bunches of aromatic herbs, beads of mushrooms, braids of onions and garlic on the walls, under the ceiling, above the table with treats;
  • Bright ribbons radiating like rays from a common center will create a festive atmosphere . And also ears of cereals, flowers in bouquets and wreaths - poppies, sunflowers, bells, cornflowers (can be artificial, now you can’t immediately distinguish them from real ones);

The ambience is emphasized by ethnic musical instruments (cardboard bandura, kobza), a massive chest in the corner, simple and painted pottery - jugs, pots, jugs.

To make an original invitation in Ukrainian style, decorate a white blank with your own hands. Along the edges there is a braid with an ethnic ornament (print or draw according to the example). In the center is a loaf and spikelets, a mud hut with a thatched roof and a garna maiden standing next to it, or a flower wreath with colorful ribbons.
