Special terms
The world of handicrafts has its own special language. If sewing is a new hobby for you, you will probably find it useful to have a glossary of terms and abbreviations that will be used in the instructions for sewing a suit.
- DI is the length of the product.
- OT - waist circumference.
- ОШ - neck circumference.
- OG - chest circumference.
- DP - shoulder length.
- VPr - armhole height. It is calculated by the formula: OR divided by 6 + 5 cm.
- ШП - front width.
- ШС - back width.
- A part is a part of a future product. For sewing, patterns of individual parts are created, then the parts are cut out and sewn together.
- The shelf is half of the front part of the bodice.
- Cutting is the process of obtaining fabric parts by cutting them out of a piece of fabric in accordance with the pattern details and taking into account seam allowances.
- Seam allowance is the distance from the edge of the piece to the machine stitch line. Seam allowances for individual tailoring usually range from 1.5-3 cm, depending on the type of seam.
- Stitch - sew together two parts of approximately the same size, folding them with their right sides inward.
- Stitch - join two parts using a machine stitch along an oval contour. So, for example, they sew a collar into the neckline, a sleeve into the armhole.
- Stitch - secure the folded edges of the product using a sewing machine.
Step-by-step instructions for making a costume
In our instructions, we will tell you how to sew a gypsy costume, consisting of a blouse tied at the waist and a floor-length circle skirt.
Skirt
Cut out the skirts:
- In order to cut out a circle skirt, you need to take two measurements: OT and DI.
- An important nuance: remember that the technology for sewing this skirt depends on the desired length of the product. You should pay attention to the fact that if you are sewing a full-length circle skirt for an adult, then due to the width of the fabric it must be made of two semicircles. It will be impossible to cut out a full circle due to the standard fabric width of 150 cm.
- Divide the waist circumference by two π (6.28) to find out the radius. On the fabric folded twice the width, we set aside the length + radius of our skirt. In this way we find its center and then fold the fabric in this place.
- Setting aside a radius from the center, mark a quarter of the circle with chalk or soap. Let's mark the waist line with a dotted line.
- Let's move the length of the skirt down from the waist. It is necessary to set aside the length every 3-4 centimeters so that the cut is accurate and neat. Once this is done, you can outline the bottom of the skirt and cut it out. Don't forget to leave a 1.5-2 cm seam allowance for hemming the bottom of the skirt.
Skirt tailoring:
- Sew up the bottom of the skirt.
- Make a drawstring on the finished skirt and insert an elastic band.
- The skirt can (and should!) be decorated with frills, beads or braid.
Building a blouse pattern and cutting fabric
In order to create a blouse pattern, you will need to take the following measurements: DI, OSH, OG, DP, VPr, ShP, ShS.
Back:
- Let's draw a rectangle, the length of which is equal to DI, and the width is equal to OG, divided by 4. Mark the neck: put a distance equal to 1 cm from the top left point downwards, and to the side - OSH / 6. By connecting these two points, we get a neck line.
- Next, let’s set aside a distance equal to Vr from the top right point down. From the top point of the neck, draw a segment equal to the DP, lowering it down 2 centimeters. It turns out that this segment will run obliquely.
- Let's draw an auxiliary line at the level of VPr / 2. The line should be half the length of the AL. By connecting three points - the edge of the shoulder line, the edge of the auxiliary line and the lower point of the segment equal to VPr, we get an armhole.
Before:
- To build a shelf pattern, we draw a rectangle, the length of which is equal to DP, and the width is equal to ШП / 2.
- Let's build a neck. To do this, from the upper left point we measure down a distance equal to ОШ/6 + 1, and to the side - ОШ/6. Let's connect the dots in a semicircle. To make a deep neckline, measure the required distance from the shoulder down to the point where it ends (usually this place is a couple of centimeters above the edge of the armhole), and thus widen the neckline.
- Let's build an armhole - the same as on the back, the only exception will be that the auxiliary line in this case will be equal to half the width.
- To tie the blouse at the waist, draw two lines. One will be straight, without slope. This line will continue the bottom of the rectangle. We will draw the second one from the bottom point of the neck. It will gradually slope down as the ribbons that tie the blouse taper towards the end.
Sleeve:
- The sleeve in our case will be elbow length, below we will make frills. The frills look like a circle skirt reduced several times: the radius is the circumference of the elbow divided by two. Let's draw a vertical line equal to its length. From the top point you need to lower a perpendicular equal to OG / 8 + 3. This is the height of the sleeve collar.
- Having received the desired point, we will draw a line from it equal to OG / 3 + 2. This will be the width of the sleeve. Let's connect the lines.
- Let's connect the extreme points of the resulting trapezoid with the top point of the middle line of the pattern. You will get a triangle. Let's divide each line in half. Let's connect the top point with the received one and then with the extreme point of the trapezoid on both sides. The resulting line will outline the edge of the sleeve. It must be remembered that the length of the sleeve cap should be 1 cm greater than the front and back armholes combined.
- From the bottom point we draw a line the length of the elbow circumference.
- Trace the cut out pattern onto the fabric with chalk or soap. Mark the seam allowances.
Assembling the blouse
Steps:
- Having cut out the parts, we begin assembling the blouse. First, let's connect the back and front along the shoulder sections.
- Since the neck of the blouse will also be decorated with a frill, you just need to carefully hem the fabric.
- We sew the side sections of the front and back.
- Let's process the bottom of the product.
- Let's prepare the sleeve and stitch the bottom. We sew the sleeves into the armholes.
- Let’s finally iron the product.
- Let's sew buttons over the blouse's strings. Decorate the collar with a frill.

Main components of the image
Women's gypsy national dance costume consists of a wide skirt (flared) and a blouse with voluminous falling sleeves. It can be a one-piece dress with hems that rise and swirl freely.
Gypsies also often add a beautiful fringed shawl to their costume (draped over the shoulders or tied at the hips), massive shiny jewelry (beads, monistas, earrings, bracelets), and braid flowers into their long flowing hair.
A colorful scarf may be tied on the head (like a bandana worn by a pirate or chieftain).
Basically, a gypsy costume with an open stomach, shoulders and legs is only acceptable as a carnival costume, because women of this people are not allowed to dress like that. Even if they perform in the national theater, they wear the most closed clothing possible for dancing.
A gypsy costume for performances should shine and “make noise”: that is, be decorated with sequins, beads, sparkles, and sometimes it is embroidered with hanging coins along the frills.
A carnival costume can be limited to only one circle skirt. Just sew on lots of fluffy ruffles to create a layered look. But for dancing you will need additional petticoats, flounces and frills in several layers.
As a rule, fabric for a gypsy costume is needed in bright, rich colors (red, blue, green, orange, yellow, purple) with floral prints or polka dots.
The men's gypsy costume is no less colorful and beautiful than the women's. Gypsy men wear black trousers, colorful shirts with wide sleeves and beautiful collars for performances; the look can also be complemented by a vest with appliqués or braids, a hat, a silk scarf, and a wide leather belt.
You can see luxurious boots on the men’s feet, while women very often don’t wear anything to dance and perform barefoot.

As you already understand, the most important thing in a gypsy’s costume is the skirt. To make a real circle skirt, you will need a pattern. By changing the sizes, you can sew both an outfit for adults and a children's costume.
Choose a light but dense fabric that will flow well and not wrinkle too much. You can use artificial silk, satin, polyester, mixed fabric. You will also need bias tape (colored and black) and chiffon.
- To make a skirt that is suitable for both a carnival party and a dance, cut out two flared suns. To do this, take your waist measurements and measure the length of your future skirt.
- Consider the length of the frills.
- The material blanks must be carefully stitched.
- The frills need to be cut out and sewn into a large ring along the length of two circles of your skirts. Then edge them with bias tape, gather them (lay them on top of each other as they will be sewn to the skirt) and stitch them.
- The frills should be distributed evenly along the bottom of the skirt, so you need to sew them in small sections, constantly monitoring and distributing the “gathering”.
- To sew a belt, you need to cut a piece of fabric slightly larger than the waist circumference in length, sew it to the skirt and insert an elastic band. Although, according to the rules, the belt of a gypsy costume needs to be glued with non-woven fabric or double linen.
Now your skirt is ready. Using this principle and pattern, you can sew an outfit for a girl of any age. True, if you are making a costume for adults (carnival or dance), you can choose one of the varieties of gypsy hem design:
- flamenco style - imitation of the presence of frills or many narrow frills sewn one above the other;
- “Kotlyar” hem - one large and very wide frill;
- “ragged” hem or Esmeralda hem - with the help of such a flirty detail you can open the leg almost to the knee.
But the skirt isn't everything. If you want to make a children's gypsy costume, then it is best to sew a top for the top.
- It is sewn quite simply. Cut out a rectangle from the remaining fabric (its width should be equal to two waist circumferences, and measure the length for the child).
- Sew it with a bobbin rubber band.
- Also cut out strips of fabric and edge them with trim. Then sew so that you can insert the elastic.
- Decorate the top with ruffles.
WATCH: Making an Autumn costume for a girl
You can add a lace-up bodice to a carnival costume for adults, which will highlight the waist and highlight the chest (worn over a white or colorful wide blouse). Or try making a real gypsy blouse with ruffles and huge flowing sleeves. To make a flared sleeve pattern, use a regular straight sleeve pattern:
- draw a line ¾ of the sleeve, cut along this line;
- now draw a vertical line in the middle on the top of the sleeve; cut the sleeve to the hem;
- Move the halves that you have obtained to the sides to create a flare.
You can also sew a sleeve according to the “Spanish flu” principle, that is, make a tight sleeve up to the elbow, and then give it a flared shape. The collar of a blouse will be more beautiful and impressive if it is decorated with ruffles. You don’t have to sew on the buttons, but tie the shirt in a knot above the stomach.
Don’t forget about iconic details and accessories that will complement your look: a bright scarf or shawl, flowers in your hair, expressive makeup, a lot of beautiful jewelry that rings. For a carnival look, a deck of cards or a smoking pipe will also come in handy.

Accessories
A gypsy's outfit can be complemented with beads, bright hair clips, a scarf, a monisto or flowers. You can make your own roses from organza or satin ribbon and attach them to a blouse, hairpin or headband. To create one rose we will need 50 cm of ribbon 2 cm wide and a needle approximately 10 cm long. The whole process takes a few minutes.
Making an organza rose in a few minutes
Step-by-step instructions for making a rose:
- We cut the edge of the tape at an angle.
- We collect the tape on the needle every 2-3 cm.
- We lift the assembly up, thread the edge of the tape into the eye of the needle.
- We twist the rose clockwise. The tape should be slightly straightened, however, avoid tension.
- By turning the needle in the opposite direction, we make the rose more voluminous. You can make an open flower or a bud just beginning to bloom - depending on your desire. By lifting the ear up, we can roll the middle more tightly.
- Carefully pull the needle through the assembly. Then we cut off the tail, melt the material and glue or stitch the rose so that it does not stretch upward in the future.
The rosette can be supplemented with a leaf and stamens. For the leaf we will need a ribbon 4 cm wide and 2 cm long.
To make a leaf:
- Fold the ribbon in half, hold it with tweezers and secure the edge with a lighter.
- We will make three folds on each side.
- Let's cut it off and fasten the tip together with a lighter.
- Glue the leaf to the rose, adding a few stamens. Now the rose is ready.
Woman suit
Women and girls want the image of a gypsy to make them more attractive to men. They want to be flashy and sexy at the same time. It cannot be said that their costume is very different from that for girls, but thanks to some details, it becomes more relaxed and frank.
What you will need
In the wardrobe of any adult woman most often there are such things as:
- Two long floor-length skirts. They should have a flared hem that is trimmed with a bright pattern or border.
- White blouse with a deep neckline and puffy sleeves.
- Tight-fitting corset.
- Colorful shawl.
- A scarf-bandana with a bright acid color.
- Multi-colored jewelry: bracelets and earrings in the form of rings, beads of various sizes.
- Dress boots with stiletto heels or pumps.
- Cosmetic makeup set: eyeliner, mascara, eye shadow, lipstick.
- Electric curlers or curlers.
Instructions
- Two skirts will beautifully round the hips, making the figure more feminine. It is good if the underskirt contrasts in color with the upper.
- Tuck a snow-white blouse into the waistband of your skirt.
- On top, wear a black tight-fitting corset, which, coupled with the deep armhole of the blouse, will attract the attention of others. In addition, this piece of clothing favorably emphasizes the chest line and makes the waist thin and flexible.
- A colorful shawl looks piquant instead of a belt.
- A bandana tied on the head makes the look somewhat reckless.
- Shoes with fashionable stilettos add grace to your gait.
- Festive makeup and hair styling make the gypsy look certainly chic. To become like representatives of this sultry nation, tight curls are curled using a curling iron or curlers. A charming appearance is created by eyes lined with seductive arrows, drawn on thick black eyebrows and long glued eyelashes. The finishing touch is red lipstick.
- Holiday accessories – the more the merrier. Without a doubt, wear everything that is at hand - all kinds of beads, bracelets of different sizes, massive earrings. Many rings on each finger are also welcome.
The gypsy outfit will catch the eye of all guests of the festive celebration. It is impossible to pass by a blooming and cheerful girl with a mischievous sparkle in her gaze. Making a gypsy outfit is not at all difficult. You don't need to be a professional dressmaker or spend money on expensive fabrics and jewelry. Everything you need is always at hand.

To complete the look you will need shoes. It’s better to take something neutral and comfortable - dancing, games and the sparkling fun atmosphere of New Year’s Eve will not leave you the slightest chance to sit in the corner all evening, especially when you are wearing such a costume.
If you want to do makeup, then you should think about bright lipstick. It will be the key to your evening look. No other special makeup is required in this situation. You can let your hair down. It will be good to make small curls.
Another interesting accessory is a deck of cards. By taking her with you to the holiday, you will make the image of a gypsy even more believable. How can you not promise everyone around you great love and growing income in the coming year? If your daughter or granddaughter is the “fortune teller,” then for the children’s party you can make cards from white cardboard. One A4 sheet will be the basis for two cards. All that remains is to stick colored images of cards on it or draw them yourself. The creation of this detail of the costume can be entrusted to the child himself: preparing for the carnival together is more interesting and fun.
Men's party suit
It is much easier for the stronger half of humanity to dress in the style of a gypsy than for a woman.
The only difficulty will be finding suitable pants. It doesn't have to be just black pants. The pants should be quite wide, and the cut should resemble Arab clothing. For one evening, of course, it is not always profitable to buy new clothes, so you can get by with loose black trousers. You need to belt your pants with a wide red belt; if you don’t have a suitable one, then a scarf will do. On top you need to wear a bright colored shirt. Mandatory condition: you need to wear it wide open. A red bandana and a black curly wig will complete the look. And the icing on the cake will be the ear clip. This image is quite suitable not only for an adult man, but also for a boy. The gypsy costume will look stylish and original.
