How to choose a hat size for a child

When a child is very small, he is only a few months old, it is difficult to take him to clothing stores, so you need to buy hats according to your own measurements. Building the bottom

Length of the bottom of the product. Make a right angle where point O will be the vertex. Next, the length of the bottom of the cap is canceled, about 10 cm.

Bottom width at top. From vertex O to the right, measure 5 cm and make point O2.

A cap is an important component of a baby’s first wardrobe. In addition to purely aesthetic functions, this headdress plays an important protective role. The cap protects the fontanel on the baby’s head, protecting it from temperature changes and drafts.

Of course, you can buy a cap in a store. But how much more comfortable and warmer will a baby be in a hat sewn by the hands of his mother or grandmother! Making your baby's first headdress is not difficult.

The pattern of a cap for a newborn is extremely simple; the sewing technology does not require deep practical skills.

Moreover, sewing can be done manually, without a sewing machine. You will learn how to make a cute cap with your own hands in this article.

How to sew a cap

First of all, we need to know two parameters - the circumference of the baby’s head and the length of the cap. Head circumference is measured by the protruding parts of the forehead and back of the head. We measure the length of the cap from the forehead to the hole in the back of the head.

The hat can be sewn in two ways - from two or three parts. We will consider both manufacturing options.

To sew a cap for a child we will need:

fabric, natural, preferably cotton;
bias tape for finishing the edge (you can buy ready-made or cut it on the bias from a suitable fabric);
lace for decoration;
threads;
needle, pins, sewing machine.

Important Note

Be sure to wash and steam iron the fabric first. This will prevent the finished cap from shrinking during further washing.

Measurements and pattern for a children's cap

For an example of constructing a pattern, let’s take the volume of the child’s head to be 48 cm. To determine the width of the side part of the cap, you need to divide the length of the head circumference by two.

Accordingly, the half-circumference of the head will be 24 cm.
If you are sewing a product without the ability to find out the actual size of the baby’s head (for example, in advance, before giving birth, or you want to surprise a young mother), then you can use a table with average figures for children’s head volumes.

Let's first work on a cap for newborns made of two parts. On the one hand, such a model is very easy to manufacture, on the other hand, it provides ample opportunities for the implementation of the needlewoman’s design ideas.

To sew a cap, you can download a cap pattern on the Internet and print it in full size. Or you can sew a cap for a newborn using a pattern you made yourself. Moreover, in this case, you will be able to take into account all your fantasies when sewing a hat and model it as you wish.

We begin to build the pattern from the back of the head. From the upper left corner of the drawing we will move to the right and down. From point (∙) A to the right we set aside a quarter of the semicircle of the head plus one and a half cm for a loose fit.

AB = 1⁄2 OG: 4 + 1.5 cm = 24:4 + 1.5 cm = 7.5 cm;
AD = 1⁄2 OG:2 + 3 cm = 24:2 + 3 cm = 15 cm.
We complete the rectangle ABCD.
From (∙) B along the angle bisector we set aside 2 cm.
From (∙) D up we set aside 5 mm.
From (∙) C to the left we set aside 2 cm.

We connect the resulting (∙) patterns with pattern curves - see drawing.

We made a pattern for half of the back part. We mark the fold line and sewing line on it.

We measure the sewing line. This is convenient to do with a measuring tape.

Draw a rectangle ABCD in which
AB = 1⁄2 OG: 2 = 24:2 = 12 cm;

AD is equal to the length of the sewing line. In our example, this is 20 cm. From (∙) D, we put 1 cm to the right and up. We mark (∙). We connect everything (∙) with straight lines - see drawing.

We made a pattern for half of the side piece. We mark the fold line and sewing line on it.

The prepared pattern pieces do not include additional seam allowances on the fabric. Allowances have already been taken into account in detail.

Three-piece cap pattern

This hat consists of two side parts and one central stripe.
For cutting, you can use a ready-made pattern by printing it in full size.
Be sure to check the dimensions of the parts with the actual dimensions of the child's head and, if necessary, adjust the pattern.
A self-made pattern will certainly correspond more accurately to the required dimensions.
To make a pattern drawing according to individual sizes, two parameters will be required: the semi-circumference of the head and the length from the forehead to the occipital fossa.
Let us take them to be equal to 18 cm and 20 cm, respectively.
To draw the side panel, we build a rectangle A A1H H1 with sides:
AN = 1⁄2 OG + 4 cm = 18:2 + 4 cm = 13 cm;
AA1 = 1⁄2 OG + 2 cm = 18:2 + 2 cm = 11 cm.

We divide the segments AA1 and HH1 in half and put (∙) Г and Г1. From (∙) A we draw a bisector and set aside 2.5 cm. From (∙) H we set aside 2 cm to the right. We connect with a pattern curve (∙) 2; G; 2.5; G1. From (∙) A1 we put 1 cm down. We draw a line from (∙) G1 through (∙) 1, extending it by 1 cm. We connect (∙) 1 with (∙) H1 line and extend it by 1 cm. Put ( ∙) H2. We draw a straight line from (∙) H2 to (∙) 2.

For the central strip we also build a rectangle. Its sides are equal:

AN = A1H1 – length from the forehead to the occipital fossa, i.e. 20 cm;

AA1 = НН1 – 1⁄2 half-circumference of the head, i.e. 9 cm.
