Each of us has probably heard about unique works of art that were used to decorate the interiors of palaces in the distant past. The modern mosaic painting, similar to the classic creation, has evolved to the level of a home craft that is accessible to everyone. By devoting some free time to your studies, you will be able to create a beautiful masterpiece with your own hands.
To work on such a work, it is not at all necessary to have extraordinary talents and be a brilliant artist or designer. Many mosaic paintings can be made using special kits that contain all the necessary materials and instructions.
What is the set?
For example, such kits are produced in convenient tubes under the Snezhka brand. Their surface is covered with a protective film, and their low weight makes it easy to transport the packaging home.
Each pack depicts a specific mosaic painting, the tools and parts for which you receive. In this box you will find:
- a base on which a marking diagram is applied (using it you can easily recreate the desired image);
— a set of mosaic particles in the colors you need;
- special tweezers for work;
— plastic containers for sorting “puzzles” to make it easier to find what you need;
— a certificate that will coordinate your actions.
How to do embroidery using ready-made kits
This type of needlework involves the use of ready-made kits that include all the necessary parts. The idea of creativity lies in choosing an interesting plot, as well as masterfully performing embroidery. You can choose diamond mosaic sets with an exotic character or a classic landscape.
Plot ideas have no boundaries - all kinds of plants, rare flowers, portraits of celebrities and many other thematic compositions.
For those new to this kind of creative hobby, this assistance from manufacturers helps to better control the process of completing mosaic work.
What is included in an interior design project?
The unique surface of the finished painting is achieved thanks to the diamond cut of each element. The set also includes special tweezers - it allows you to more accurately control your work so as not to “miss” the rhinestones on the canvas.
First stage: beginning
We print the packaging, find the work diagram and remove the protective film from its surface. Underneath there is an adhesive base on which multi-colored “diamonds” will be attached. The implementation of voluminous plots sometimes takes up to 2-30 days, so there is no need to worry about the adhesive film - it does not dry out and will remain in working condition throughout the entire process. If you are just starting to learn the mosaic technique, then the protective film can be removed gradually in certain fragments.
Stage two: let's get to work
The next steps are exciting and extremely simple . The rhinestones from the set have their own numbering, which is also reflected on the adhesive diagram. We take tweezers and use them to carefully place the “diamonds” in the corresponding cells. In order for the faceted elements to fit tightly to the base, you need to press them down a little.
Diamond rows can be trimmed using a stationery ruler (metal). This method helps control the work so that the finished rows do not move during gluing.

Stage three: finishing the work
The result should be a picture consisting of rows tightly adjacent to each other. The technique of making dense monolithic rows and it is for this reason that such mosaic is called “diamond embroidery”. After completely filling out all the cells, you should again turn to the metal ruler and finally straighten the completed composition.
In the video of a diamond mosaic, you can watch the step-by-step process of making paintings with your own hands, which will help you understand in detail the intricacies of this handicraft.
Diamond mosaics can be purchased online on the Aliexpress website. A wide selection of sets allows you to make not only single, but also wholesale purchases.
In the construction and repair industry, there is also one product whose name includes the word “diamond” - diamond crowns for tiles. By using this device, it is possible to drill through any type of tile (including porcelain stoneware). It is relevant to working with diamond mosaic paintings only if it is necessary to drill holes of a certain diameter in the image.
Foundation comes first
“Snow White” is a mosaic painting that can be assembled not only by adults, but also by children over 12 years old. A convenient and understandable diagram drawn on the base greatly simplifies the work. It is divided into many small multi-colored sectors. Each of them has a symbol indicating the color of the part that needs to be placed in it.
This type of marking is much more convenient than digital marking. The fact is that mosaic paintings are created with your own hands from a large number of shades. If each of them were designated by a separate number, these numbers would be large and would not fit well in the small squares. With compact icons this problem does not arise.
Their decoding is below the diagram. Its location simplifies the creative process, because the hint is always visible. And upon completion of the work, this part of the canvas can simply be cut off.

We create diamond paintings - beautiful and easy
I have been working with diamond paintings for a long time and I have already written about them on this blog. At first I bought patterns with rhinestones and made pictures for myself, made them, and gave them to friends and family members. Now I work with them more and more; buying ready-made ones is simply expensive and pointless. Sometimes I make portraits to order, and just images at the customer’s choice.
Not long ago I came across a special program with which you can create a diagram for diamond paintings yourself. Then, using this scheme, it is not difficult to order the necessary rhinestones in the online store and the adhesive checkered base.
Here is the original photo and what I got in this program:
Just imagine this picture, which will still sparkle and shimmer depending on the lighting.
So, the program's capabilities:
- selection of colors and rhinestones, and separately, which is important. You can exclude some of them, or vice versa add a new color; — possibility of image scaling. Moreover, make it both smaller and larger. In this regard, there is complete freedom, which is very convenient and often necessary; — there is manual editing, and you can not only correct it, but directly complete the drawing, change it, finish it as needed, even contrary to the original image. For example, add a leaf to a flower for symmetry, or make the eyes in a portrait more expressive; — gorgeous post-processing with color correction. The program creates truly implementable, and moreover, conveniently and easily implementable schemes; - You can manually change colors. For example, in the photo from which the diagram is made they are quite faded, as often happens with portraits made to order from photographs, for example. Or you can make it bright enough automatically. And then add something else, correct it, adjust it manually. And it turns out just incredibly beautiful. Of course, all this could have been done during the layout process, as many craftsmen I know do, but it doesn’t turn out as good as when a professional program does it all.
There are 3 program options:
Basic, advanced and master versions, how they differ can be read on the website: https://almaznaja-mozaika.ru
Here is the process of working with the master version:
1. Upload a picture, select the number of colors and size, create a diagram:
2. Here you can adjust the color, add or remove. And here you can do a partial covering of the picture, if you need to cover not the entire picture with rhinestones, but only a selected fragment.
3. And the last mode, I like the most, here you can create. Add, draw, correct everything as your heart desires.
Once editing is complete, we save everything. The program gives us a Legend for the pattern - colors and number of rhinestones by color and in grams
as well as the scheme itself in several versions. On separate sheets in large format and one large one for printing along with a color palette.
What I personally liked
What I liked most, of course, was the price. A year of working with the software already pays off on two or three schemes. Now I understand how much producers earn from them. And this despite the fact that they also buy materials at wholesale prices. It is quite possible that this is exactly the program they are working on, well, or something similar to it for sure. Translates perfectly, almost no need to edit manually. More precisely, I often use this type of image editing, but not to correct the “jambs” of the program, but to finish drawing something myself, with my own hands. And such freedom of creativity cannot but please. The quality of even the first version is simply amazing. To be honest, sometimes in a store you buy more poorly made circuits than the program simply produces in a minute. So the point here is not only to make a diagram of a given and specific image, but also the quality and ease of implementation will often be better than that of purchased options.
Important Features
The surface of the base is lubricated with special glue and covered with a protective film. Since the substance that fixes the parts dries very quickly, the additional coating must not be completely removed. Each time you start working, remove small fragments of the film and apply the parts to the area freed from it.
To make it more convenient for you to assemble mosaic paintings, do not jump from one area of the canvas to another. It is better to move smoothly between opposite edges. Even if the fixative on the untreated area dries out prematurely, you can replace it with a special glue for plastic. Although this option will require more time and effort.
The mosaic details are very small. But they are arranged by color in small bags and containers, which makes working with this material much easier.
Creating a tiger
To create a “big cat” you need to prepare:
- a picture of an animal;
- frame with glass;
- PVA glue;
- small syringe;
- Swarovski rhinestones or acrylic.
Before starting work, the picture can be processed on a computer to obtain a clear outline of the image and draw the locations of the rhinestones and print it out.
We place the workpiece under the glass from the frame and secure it with tape. Fill the syringe with glue.
Apply a small drop of glue to the surface of the glass and carefully glue the diamond onto it using tweezers. Press carefully so that the glue does not leak out from under the diamond. Similarly, we lay out the remaining rhinestones on the glass according to the diagram.

After all the rhinestones are in place, you can remove the diagram and place the picture in a frame. For greater effect, you can put a sheet of black paper under the glass.
Where to start?
Do-it-yourself mosaic paintings are created according to the following scheme. First, place the base on a straight, hard surface (table or floor). Next, your main task is to fill each cell on the canvas with pebbles of the appropriate color. Pour them little by little into containers and remove one at a time using tweezers. Place the pieces one after another into the drawn squares.
The details that make up the mosaic picture are very clearly cut. That’s why such ready-made sets are often called diamond sets. After a certain part of the base is completely covered with them, you will see how the sun plays in the edges of each element. Despite the fact that they are made of plastic, light rays are refracted through them and create a unique glow.
Interesting photo mosaic
This technique is increasingly gaining popularity because it does not require expensive material to create; you just need to process and print your existing photographs of different sizes.
However, it will be very difficult to make such a photo collage manually, but progress does not stand still; special computer programs have been created that will simplify your work. But there are several basic rules when working in these programs, which should be used impeccably and carefully prepared:
- To work in these programs you will need a large number of photographs, at least 200-300 pieces. The optimal use is 500-600 pieces;
- A prerequisite is that the location of all photographs must be the same: either horizontal or vertical;
- You should also pay attention to the resolution and quality of the photographs, it should also be the same;
- It is best to use this technique to create a portrait, which should not have an additional background, it will be much more convenient;
- If you decide to use some other picture, then make sure that there are no thin or small lines; it will be very difficult to reproduce them;
- If you don’t have enough photos of yourself, you can use other images that will serve as the background.

How it's done?
“Mosaic painting” sets are best assembled row by row. It is recommended to start working from the upper left corner and move square by square to the end of the line, and then move on to the next one. But many handmade lovers cannot resist the temptation to lay out the figures diagonally. Which scheme is more convenient for you - you will understand when you get down to business.
Assembling a mosaic according to a template is a bit like drawing a picture using numbers. The creative process in both cases must be divided into several sessions. Each of them should last no longer than three hours. Each time you will notice that your mosaic picture comes together easier and easier.
The fact is that the skills necessary for this type of creativity are very easy to develop. You will quickly remember the icons that mean this or that color, and the need to peek at the cheat sheet will decrease with each session. Your movements will become faster and more coordinated. Thanks to this, with each pass you will cover an increasing area of the base with parts.
opus tessellatum
This technique is also used to design the background of a mosaic; the lines are arranged horizontally or vertically, like a brick wall pattern (but not at the same time, this will already be an opus regulatum). The picture below shows an example of a Roman mosaic using the vertical method. When using this technique, make sure that no elements are positioned across adjacent rows, as this will result in an obvious and attention-grabbing arrangement.
Regardless of what technique or combination of techniques you choose, don’t be afraid to experiment and, importantly, enjoy the process of creating a mosaic that will delight you for many years to come!
Additional design
“Snow White” are mosaic paintings, the canvases of which can be decorated with additional elements upon completion of the work. For example, many craftsmen glue their canvases to plywood and frame them with beautiful baguettes. This operation is performed by specialists in art stores. If you want to do it yourself, consult with an expert on what indentation on the canvas is best to make from the edge of the frame. As a rule, this number fluctuates around one centimeter or half.
The packaging of mosaic paintings does not indicate their level of complexity. As a rule, it grows in direct proportion to the size of the canvas itself. In addition to the basic work recommendations listed above, remember a few more features.
Do not forget!
Firstly, if you make a mistake during the process of putting together a mosaic, it will be very difficult to correct. Therefore, when gluing parts, you need to carefully monitor what color is required for a particular square. To make your creation look neat, try to make the rows as even and uniform as possible.
Secondly, when starting work, be prepared for the fact that a lot of effort will be required from you to achieve your goal. The fact is that the details in the mosaic are very small; there are extremely many of them in the set. Therefore, you must be as calm and focused as possible in order to do everything perfectly.
Thirdly, never deviate from the plan set by the scheme. There is no point in showing your creativity in this activity, since the box contains exactly as many squares of a specific color as were intended by the creators of the set. If you want to replace one shade with another, you may simply not have enough necessary material.
Creating a painting with your own hands. Basics of Diamond Embroidery
We are publishing a long-awaited master class on the technique of correctly laying out a picture with rhinestones. Handicraft kits using this technique appeared on the Russian market not so long ago. This is an innovation from Chinese manufacturers. This pattern has a great advantage over regular embroidery - ease of execution. Even a child can do diamond mosaic! The result is amazing - the picture is three-dimensional, shiny, and will be a wonderful decoration for your interior.
It would seem that everything is simple - I received a set, it’s a small matter, but very often beginners are lost - what’s what, and how to correctly lay out the picture with rhinestones?
Start over:
1. Lay out the set in front of you.
If it happens that the base gets wrinkled during transportation, that’s okay. Take your iron, set it to silk-synthetic setting and iron the base from the inside out, starting from the edge (to make sure the temperature is correct). When ironing, do not pull the base out from under the iron - it may stretch. Usually 3 minutes is enough to get the base in order.
Now let's look at the set further.
Numbered bags with rhinestones. My rose will be laid out with beaded acrylic rhinestones - thus the finished work will resemble beadwork, which is why these sets acquired the name “Beaded Mosaic”.
A tray for rhinestones, a piece of silicone and a hollow pencil.
Now, having made sure that you have everything you need, you can get to work.
2. On the basis there is a decoding - the key to the scheme. They look like this:
Key (the number of the bag is indicated at the top along with the color designations).
Remove the protective film from the adhesive layer on the diagram.
Important! Do not remove the film completely! Otherwise, the quality of the adhesive layer may deteriorate.
If you are right-handed, start from the right street; if you are left-handed, start from the left. This way you will not constantly stick your hand to the adhesive layer.
To prevent the film from returning to its place during operation, secure it with any weight (for example, a cell phone
3. Pour the rhinestones into the tray with which you will begin the display. It's better to start in order. In my case, this is a bag No. 10 for rhinestones with the letter designation in the diagram “C”.
Now let's move on to the pencil. It has a cavity at the tip.
We will put silicone into it by simply pressing the piece with silicone (do not forget to remove the protective film from the silicone)
Now the pencil is ready to use. Remember to refill the silicone into the cavity as needed.
Use the tip of a pencil to take a piece of rhinestone from the tray.
And with a light press, move the rhinestone onto the diagram.
Important: do not press too hard on the pencil! Otherwise, the silicone will remain on the stitches, which will spoil the overall impression of the picture.
4. After you have finished laying out the wonderful picture, take any press (a book, for example) and press to fix the rhinestones on the canvas - those that do not fit well will stick tightly to the adhesive base. If your picture gets wrinkled during the process, you can repeat step 1 again - iron it from the inside out with a non-hot iron.
5. The last step (not unimportant) is to frame the picture under glass - this way you will protect the picture from dust and the adhesive layer from drying out. Your picture will remain fresh and beautiful for a long time, like this beautiful rose made using the bead mosaic technique!
Good luck to you!
Your Ekaterina and Alexandra!
results
The process of assembling a mosaic picture can hardly be called simple. But it will bring you a lot of pleasure when the first results of your work appear on the canvas. Looking at the new finished pieces will make you happy and proud. And the shine of the details in the rays of the sun will add even more charm to the finished creation.
Such sets are always of very high quality and thought out to the smallest detail. You can even collect them with your child, which will have a positive effect on his fine motor skills, creativity, and ability to concentrate. Another interesting option for creativity is a mosaic picture made of rhinestones. It sparkles even better than the standard ones and looks incredible.
How to make a picture from rhinestones in a step-by-step master class?
It is worth noting that there are glued and sewn rhinestones, and their use depends on the basis of the picture. Our master class will describe how to make a picture from glue rhinestones.
In addition to rhinestones, you will need glue (it is better to use superglue), cardboard or other base, a frame and a pencil.
The first thing to do is prepare a sketch. You can come up with and draw it yourself or print a photo you like from the Internet and copy it. Give free rein to your imagination. Don't forget to think about the color scheme and choose a suitable background. Compositions made of rhinestones look especially advantageous on a black or dark background.
Handmade paintings with patterns, stylized portraits, and animals look beautiful. It could be a puppy or a cat, a bunny or a bear. A picture with such a plot would look very good in a child’s room.
Pay attention to the photos presented in our article, and you will certainly be able to decide on the idea of your own future work.
The technique for making pictures from rhinestones is very simple. It only requires patience, perseverance and a little sleight of hand.
- Rhinestones are glued one by one onto the prepared contour sketch of the drawing. Do not use too much glue so as not to spoil the appearance of the painting. For convenience, you can take small rhinestones with tweezers.
- First, the contours are laid out, and only then the empty areas are painted over.
- Small rhinestones are used for fine lines, and large spaces are filled with large ones. Doing the work with rhinestones of different sizes will add liveliness and showiness to your work.
- To fix the design more reliably, you can use a heat-resistant film that is applied on top.
- The finished work is placed in a frame. The frame can also be decorated with a glitter pattern in the same color scheme as your work.
There is also a completely different technique.
In this case, the sketch is placed under glass, and shiny crystals are already placed on the glass surface. Rhinestones are glued along the contours, after which the design is replaced with fabric. Velvet is amazing as a background. The painting is then framed and takes pride of place among the paintings. Ready-made sets.
There are ready-made kits for sale for creating pictures from rhinestones. The set of such mosaics includes rhinestones, tweezers and a base with a special adhesive layer and a marked outline. Such sets will help you understand whether this hobby will interest you, and they are also suitable for children.
Swarovski.
Skilled needlewomen use Swarovski crystals for their paintings, creating real masterpieces. Such works look rich and impressive against a dark background, as the rhinestones stand out even more on it and look brighter. With the help of Swarovski crystals you can very effectively depict stars shining in the night. Such crystals are more expensive than ordinary rhinestones, but as a material they are of much higher quality. And the price of finished products can boggle the imagination.
The finished drawing can be supplemented with other materials to add expressiveness to it. Try adding paints or sparkles, beads, feathers or other decorative elements, and varnishing the work.
In addition, you can use this technique not only to create pictures from rhinestones, but also to make shiny decorations for bags with your own hands, make designs on clothes, refresh interior items and much more.
Use your imagination and you will understand that the possibilities of this unusual material are almost limitless. Useful tips.
Remember that regular rhinestones and hot-melt rhinestones do not go together, since rhinestones designed to be fixed with glue look better. Rough sanding will release hot-melt stones, and the impression of the painting will be spoiled.
Take your time while working. Such material does not tolerate haste, but requires patience. The more carefully you work, the more you will be pleased with the work in the end.
The work will require some artistic skills from you, but you can always copy the drawing from a photograph.
