Yarn
The choice of yarn depends on the scarf model you like, but important conditions when making knitted items for children is the careful selection of good quality yarn - warm, natural and non-prickly. The best options for making a warm children's scarf are cashmere or merino yarn. These fibers are hygroscopic, retain heat well, do not lose their original shape, and products made from them do not irritate sensitive children's skin. As a more budget-friendly option, high-quality wool blends, for example, merino and high-volume acrylic in equal parts, are suitable. The thickness of the thread can be average and contain approximately 250-300 meters in a standard factory 100-gram skein.
Spokes
The optimal knitting needle size for yarn of this thickness is No. 2.5-3. If you are planning a narrow scarf, then double-sided stocking needles will do. For wider models, the best option would be circular knitting needles - metal or bamboo on a fishing line or cord made of various composite materials.
However, one cannot follow certain recommendations without caution, since a huge number of ideas cannot be based within a strictly limited framework. For example, warm scarves are often made from thick, high-volume yarn with knitting needles larger than size 5.
Children's scarf sizes and their features
Often mothers are concerned about the question: what length and width should a children's scarf be? Don't knit it long or too wide. The optimal size is considered to be 120 cm in length - this will allow you to wrap the scarf twice around the child’s neck. You can tie it shorter, about 70 centimeters. However, you won’t be able to wrap it around your neck; you can make a knot by unraveling the ends. If you tie a scarf on a coat or a thick winter jacket, 60-70 cm is not enough.
Speaking of sizes, do not forget about the width of the children's scarf. 10 cm is enough to thoroughly wrap the baby. Remember the characteristics of the yarn - other types stretch, which makes the scarf more versatile.
Scarf for girls with double-sided elastic band
Let's start with the simplest scarf model measuring 100 * 18 cm. Universal patterns for scarves are double-sided elastic bands. They are easy to knit, but look very impressive in products due to the plasticity of the fabric and the same relief of the pattern. We knit the scarf with a French elastic band.
Scheme
The pattern for knitting a scarf on knitting needles for a girl is simple: in this pattern every two rows are repeated. The number of loops cast on should be a multiple of 4. Add 3 loops to them to maintain the symmetry of the pattern and 2 edge loops. For the scarf we will cast on 53 loops (48 + 3 + 2).
Row 1: P3, * K1, P3* (symbols * * mean repeating pattern);
Row 2: P1, * K1, P3 *, K1, P1.
By alternating these rows, you get a wonderful scarf pattern. Knit to the desired length, for example 1 m, then close the last row. The finished product made with elastic should not be subjected to aggressive heat treatment: the effect of the springy elastic will be lost.
Simple scarf for a boy
If you don’t have time or very little time to knit a scarf for your baby, namely a boy, then we offer a very simple and quick knitting method. The scheme here is not complicated and very simple.
And although the elastic pattern is not considered original, it is still optimal for knitting children's clothes and accessories. The main thing is that the scarf is comfortable for the baby and that it does not cause discomfort. You should keep in mind that for a boy, as for a girl, the following subtleties must be taken into account:
- the thing must be elastic and soft;
- it is desirable that the pattern is the same on both sides of the product;
- choose a color that can be easily combined with other things.
If we have already talked about the simplicity of knitting, then this is first of all a pattern in which faces alternate. and out. p. For example, a 1 by 1 elastic band is knitted as follows; its pattern will really appeal to beginning craftswomen:
- 1r. - edge, then knit 1. p., 1 p. p. and again the edge;

Strips of yarn of a lighter tone are included in knitting, based on your own preferences. As a rule, they are made narrow, consisting of 2 rows.
The length of such a scarf varies from 1.2 m to the desired length. Decreases at the end of knitting are made in the same way as additions at the beginning: in every 2nd row, 2 loops are knitted together along the edges. Having reduced the fabric to 3 loops, they are closed. The ends of the scarf are decorated with pom-poms made of yarn of the main color.

In addition, the versatility of this accessory allows it to be worn by everyone without exception - men, women, teenagers, children. Let's figure out how to knit a snood for a girl 8-9 years old.
Tools and materials
The presented snood model is made of thick merino yarn (95 m/100 g) with knitting needles No. 5.5. The product is knitted like a scarf lengthwise by alternating garter and stockinette stitches. One edge of the canvas is decorated with a classic braid. After stitching the knitted fabric, the braid will effectively decorate the bottom of the model. Such a snood is a very warm product and can be used as a bolero or a cape, depending on the wishes of the master and the young customer. The density of the knitted fabric is 1.7 loops per 1 cm. Before performing the work, measure the width of the snood; subsequently it will become the height of the product.
Mating order
In the presented model, the height is 40 cm. In terms of loops - 70. There are 18 loops per braid. The main fabric is knitted, alternating 4 rows of garter knitting with 2 rows of hosiery (one row - front, the second - purl). The stitch pattern is as follows: 1 edge stitch, 50 main stitches (garter stitch), 18 braid stitches, 1 edge stitch.
The braid is made according to the scheme: after 8 rows, 12 loops are crossed (the 6 outer loops are removed onto an auxiliary knitting needle, leaving behind the work, the 6 central loops of the braid are knitted, then the loops are knitted from the additional knitting needle) either on the right or on the left.
This is how longitudinal knitting is done to the desired length. Then close the last row and carefully sew the product with a knitted seam.

The differences between a snood and a collar are insignificant. It's purely a matter of length: snoods are longer and can be wrapped around the neck several times, while cowl necks were invented as collars, often luxurious and wide, but still collars. In children's fashion, a collar is the same beautiful collar that retains heat. For example, let’s take a collar made with classic braids on a garter stitch base. The shawl base is denser and warmer. For such a product, yarn of medium thickness (250 m/100 g) and knitting needles No. 3 are suitable.
Progress
The braid is made of 12 loops. In total, 58 loops are cast on for work. The spread is like this:
1 edge, *5 faces. garter stitch stitches, 12 braid stitches* (repeat 3 times), 5 knit stitches, 1 edge stitch. Thus, the fabric consists of 3 braids, separated by 5 facial loops. The braid is made by analogy with the pattern presented above, only 8 loops are involved in the weave alternately, sometimes on the left side, sometimes on the right. Overlaps are performed in 8 rows.
Knit fabric up to 60-65 cm, focusing on the desired volumes. The last row is closed and the fabric is sewn into a circle.

Making accessories such as scarves is valuable because it does not require special skills or complex calculations, i.e., knitting any model listed in the publication is quite within the capabilities of beginning knitters. To make a simple scarf model you need 100 grams. merino yarn thickness 150 m/100 g. and knitting needles No. 4. Density: 1 cm - 1.9 loops. The fabric is made in garter stitch, i.e. all stitches are knitted.
Knitting starts from the corner. Cast on 7 stitches on the knitting needles and knit in garter stitch like this: 1st r. (knit): 1 knit (L), 1 yarn over (H), 2 L, 1 H, 1 L (central loop, which should be marked with a marker), 1 H, 2 L, 1 H, 1 L. 2nd r.: (purl): 1 L, 1 N, 4 L, 1 L center, 4 L, 1 N, 1 L 3rd r.: 1 L, 1 N, 5 L, 1 N, 1 L center ., N, 5 L, N, 1 L. 4th row: 1 L, 1 N, 7 L, 1 L center., 7 L, 1 N, 1 L.
Knitting continues according to this algorithm: in the front row, 4 increases are made - on both sides of the central loop and along the edges, and in the purl row - 2 increases are made on each edge. It is necessary to carefully monitor the central loop, since the path it forms also plays a decorative role, and therefore any error will be visible on the canvas.
Having knitted 52-54 rows, the loops are closed. The scarf can be decorated with tassels, sewing one on each corner.
