What does the word "takori" mean?
The mysterious name of the hat is actually the surname of the designer who created this model - Svetlana Takori. This talented female fashion designer not only came up with a headdress with a wide lapel made of mohair with an English elastic band, but also created her own clothing brand, which is also called “Tak Ori”.
Wardrobe items and accessories from the Tacori fashion house can be found in boutiques around the world. Their popularity is constantly growing, the audience is expanding. At the same time, it is not difficult for even beginner knitters to understand how to knit a takori style hat.
The classic tacorri is made using an English elastic band. The model is a long stocking cap with a wide hem that turns up 2-3 times, giving the product additional volume. It turns out that knitting such a headdress with knitting needles is not difficult, all you need is the desire.
Mohair headdress with lapel and takkori cap
What will you need at work?
To knit a hat with knitting needles using English elastic according to the takkori pattern, you will need the most ordinary threads and knitting needles. Here is an approximate set of tools and materials that need to be prepared:
- wool yarn, approximately 200-250 meters thick per 100 grams;
- stocking or circular knitting needles No. 4-5;
- tape measure;
- scissors.
Angora or mohair takori can be knitted with 2-ply thread, as these are quite thin threads. It is better if the yarn contains not only 100% wool - fibers woven with acrylic are much stronger and more durable.
Note! English rib knitting is quite fluffy, and it requires 1.5 times more threads than when creating other patterns with knitting needles. This is important to consider when purchasing threads and making calculations.
The photo shows how fluffy and soft knitted takori are.
How to knit a mohair hat
For example, if the volume of the head is 53 cm, and the knitting density is 2 loops per 1 cm, the calculation will be as follows:
- (53-3) x 2=100
Let's get started:
- To make a seamless mohair hat, you will need circular knitting needles. We cast on 100 loops, remove the first loop, as usual, without knitting, and then knit one row with a 2 x 2 elastic band: alternately 2 knits, and then 2 purls.
- We connect the first and last loops together, after which we continue to knit in a circle according to the pattern: we knit the front loops with the front ones, and the purl ones with the purl ones.
- We knit a fabric 40 cm long, and then start decreasing it so that the bottom of the hat turns out beautiful.
- We connect 2 knit stitches together to make one loop, and then do the same with the purl stitches. Thus, you get a 1 x 1 elastic band.
- We knit 1 row, after which we pull the thread through all the loops, pull it tightly and fasten it on the wrong side.
To get a more voluminous product, you can, as already mentioned, knit in 3-4 or even 5-6 threads, then the hat will be even warmer and suitable for even the most severe frosts. In this case, the density of the fabric will be higher, and the number of loops will decrease by 1 cm.
English elastic for circular knitting needles
There are several ways to knit an English rib, which is used to make takori with a lapel. Rapport consists of only 2 loops and a yarn over, that is, when knitting with an elastic band in a circle, the number of loops in the cast-on row must be even.
The knitting pattern on stocking needles differs from the usual execution of the same pattern. The sequence will be as follows:
- 1 rub. p – knit 1, yarn over, slip 1 stitch*, repeat from * to * until the end of the row.
- 2 r. – *1 yarn over, remove 1 knit stitch unknitted, knit 1 loop + yarn over together purl*, repeat from * to * until the end of the row.
- 3 r. – *knit 1 loop + yarn over together, yarn over, remove purl loop unknitted*, repeat from * to * until the end of the row.
- Repeat rows 2 and 3 until the desired height is reached.
In order not to get confused in the knitted rows, it is recommended to mark them with special markers.
Knitting a takori hat is done in the round.
Schemes of a hat with an English elastic band with a knitted lapel
Below are various options for making a headdress with a classic English elastic band with a seam, without a seam, with one lapel and with two.
Their knitting technique is almost the same; they differ only in the length of the product and the methods of knitting the crown. To create it, you need to decrease the loops evenly until the minimum amount remains, which is pulled together using a working thread.
How to decrease correctly, that is, make 1 from 2 loops, is shown in the figure:
All you need to start the creative process is to choose a model, yarn and tools
Simple women's hat with an English elastic band lapel
The headdress with a seam is knitted in turning rows in 2 threads. In your work, you can use straight knitting needles with tips, at least 35 cm long, or circular knitting needles connected with a flexible cable. On exhaust gas 54-56 cm.
What you will need:
- 1 skein of yarn with mohair (100 g 500 m);
- knitting needles No. 5;
- needle for assembling the product.
Work algorithm:
- Cast on 61 stitches using any convenient method.
- Knit a classic 1x1 English pattern according to the pattern until the length reaches 35 cm.
- Start decreasing stitches. Divide the canvas into 4 parts. Every 2 rows, cut 4 stitches, decrease at the beginning of the wedges. You will get even columns at the same distance.
- Make decreases over 34 rows.
- Through the loops that remained in the work, pull the thread (cut it, leaving an end about 35-40 cm long) using a needle or hook and carefully pull it off.
- Perform assembly.
The product is ready.
Men's hat with a lapel knitted with English elastic
The technique of making a headdress for the stronger sex is almost identical. The difference will be in the color scheme, size and special technique of knitting the lapel for a more comfortable fit.
What you will need:
- 160 g of medium lint free blended yarn;
- knitting needles in the round with a diameter of 3 cm.
Process:
- Cast on 96 stitches.
- Knit 12 rows with 1 by 1 English rib.
- 3 rows with knit stitches.
- 3 rows with the main pattern. This creates a neat hem.
- Knit another 26 rows with the main pattern.
- Start making the crown: in odd rows, purl + knit with a knit stitch. In the next 2 knits, knit.
- Gather the remaining few loops in the work by threading the working thread through them. Secure it on the wrong side in a knitted fabric.

What you will need:
- 1 skein of mixed yarn (240 m in 100 g);
- knitting needles with a diameter of 3 cm, connected by a flexible cable.
Work algorithm:
- Cast on 69 loops (one for closing in a circle), mark the beginning of knitting with a marker.
- Connect the circle by knitting 2 loops crossed so that a hole does not form.
- On the remaining 68 loops, work with the main pattern in the circle until the fabric reaches a height of 25-26 cm.
- Start knitting the crown. Row 1: Discard yarn overs by knitting them together with knit stitches. Rows 2, 3, 4: classic rib 1 on 1. Row 5: get rid of purls (2 together, 1 knit) Rows 6, 7: knit. Row 8: 2 together, knit 2.
- Pull the remaining 8 loops with thread and fasten the end to the wrong side. The product is ready.

Taking measurements and calculations
When creating a hat, whether takori or any other, it is important to correctly measure the circumference of your head. To find out this measurement, stretch the measuring tape just above the eyebrow line. The height of the product should be significantly greater than the planting depth. You can recognize it by measuring the distance from the bridge of your nose to the base of the back of your head. The resulting figure should be divided in half and multiplied by 2.5.
The picture shows how to take measurements correctly
Unraveling fluffy threads like angora or mohair yarn is very difficult. In this case, the thread deteriorates greatly and cannot be reused. Therefore, in order to avoid mistakes, you should definitely knit a small test fragment, which will allow you to correctly calculate the loops in the cast-on row.
An easy way to knit a takori
The master class given here describes how to knit a hat with a head circumference of 52-54 cm. The sequence of steps will be as follows:
Women's hat in takkori style with two lapels turns out to be voluminous
- Cast on a row of 70 stitches and close them into a ring.
Place cast-on stitches evenly on 4 double needles
- Knit in a smooth, beautiful English stitch in circular rows until the height of the fabric exceeds the planting depth by approximately 2 times (33-35 cm).
The canvas can be a little larger or smaller, the main thing is that it is enough for 2 lapels
- Start making decreases to shape the crown. To do this, knit row 1 like this: *knit stitch, yarn over + purl stitch together*, repeat from * to * until the end of the row.
- Next we knit 2 more rows according to the pattern.
- Again perform a series of decreases according to the following pattern: *knit + purl – knit a knit stitch*, repeat from * to * end of the row.
Gradually the cap will begin to narrow
- Knit the next row without changes.
- Then, in every second row, decrease by knitting 2 loops together.
- When there are only 8 loops left on the knitting needles, cut the thread and pull it through them with a crochet hook. Pull the loops together, closing the hole in the top of the hat. Hide the tail of the thread on the wrong side.
With this method of knitting a takori hat with an English elastic band, it turns out with an even, regular crown.
A double knitted hat in the takori style for the winter is created in the same way. For additional insulation, you can make a lining with stockinette stitch to the size of your head, and then carefully sew it into the finished product with a hidden seam, without pulling it together.
Examples of knitting various patterns
Various types of hats are knitted from mohair. Most of them are some variation of a beanie (a sock cap or an elongated stocking cap).
The following are knitted according to a similar principle:
- tight-fitting option;
- model with a single lapel;
- takori (with double or triple hem);
- voluminous round hat;
- double double-sided variety;
- Trumpet hat.
The finished product can be decorated with stripes, knitted decorative elements, beads, buttons, and pompoms.
Simple voluminous hat
It is proposed to knit the option without a lapel. To work, you will need 100 g of mohair in 3 folds and knitting needles No. 6.
Step-by-step instruction:
- For example, knit a small piece of stockinette stitch, approximately 5x5 cm. Count the number of loops in 1 cm. Measure the circumference of your head. Multiply the resulting numbers.
- Cast on the needles with the calculated number of stitches, for example 50, plus a couple of stitches for the edge. Total 52 p.
- Knit 2 rows with an elastic band, alternating one knit stitch and one purl stitch.
- Start knitting the fabric with a scarf pattern: all rows, both purl and knit, consist exclusively of knit stitches, including the last one (the first, as always, is simply removed).
- Having knitted the product to a height of 25 cm, round the top by knitting all the loops of the row, except the first and last, 2 together. Now there will be 27 loops left.
- Continue knitting two stitches at a time, slipping the edge stitch and knitting the last 2 stitches of the row together. Now there are 14 of them left.
- Once again, knit two loops at a time, and pull off the remaining ones by threading the cut working thread through the bottom. Use the remaining tip to decorate the back seam in any convenient way, for example, using a needle. You need to sew the fabric from the inside out. The hat is ready.
By analogy, you can knit the fabric with another pattern you like. The main thing is not to tighten the knitting.
Seamless option
In order for the hat to not have a seam, you will have to knit in the round, therefore, there will be no edge loops here. The hat will take about 100 g of yarn in two threads. A mohair hat with English elastic is knitted like this:
