Crocheting and knitting cords - features of the technique, step-by-step master classes, photo examples

Crocheting carpets from cord

My name is Lyuba Polevaya, I live in Vologda, I am married, I have two small children. I am currently on maternity leave with my second child.

I love to crochet. Previously, I knitted various things for my daughter, pillows, vases and other items for the home from Ribbon, Spaghetti, Noodles yarn.

Some time ago I discovered such a knitting material as polyester cord with a core. Cord knitting is a very exciting activity that brings pleasure from the work. It’s nice to do something with your own hands for your loved ones, as well as for lovers of beautiful, practical things who value handmade work.

Polyester thread is a synthetic fiber, 100% polyester, with a springy fiber structure, which ensures the ability of products to return to their original state when stretched or compressed.

Despite the fact that it is synthetic, products made from cord look as if they were made from natural raw materials, they are environmentally friendly, durable, moisture-resistant, durable and high-quality, have a beautiful shape, while being soft and pleasant to the touch.

Carpets, rugs, runners, bags, jewelry, baskets and other things can be knitted from polyester cord.

I love crocheting cord rugs. I want to say that such products are not deformed, do not cause allergies, are not susceptible to mold, and even dust does not collect on them!

They are easy to machine wash at 30 degrees. It needs to be dried flat.

I present to you my works.

Embossed oval carpets

On the Internet you will find many options for making such rugs using various techniques and patterns. The choice of a specific knitting option will depend on your idea.

A cord carpet can be made either without a pattern or with a specific pattern according to patterns - these will be embossed oval carpets.

This rug can be crocheted or made with your own hands from linen, hemp or linen cord. The number of threads will directly depend on the desired size and thickness of the product.

To knit a rug of medium size and density you will need:
  • cord (about 5 mm thick) about 800 meters long (for a product with a diameter of 1100 mm);
  • crochet hook No. 5 or 6;
  • diagram of the rug (you can use the design of any napkin).

It is best to purchase the cord at a large hardware store. The number of threads here will directly depend on the size of the carpet. If the rug involves a large number of volumetric parts, then you should take a larger cord. The weight of the finished carpet in this case can be more than three kilograms.

Round cord carpet

Most often, when knitting according to the pattern, relief carpets are created. Their implementation is more labor-intensive and requires special knitting skills, but if you take a simple pattern, then even a beginner can master it.

By increasing the carpet diameter to 2300 mm. you will need about 2200 meters of cord (this will also increase the weight).

An oval rug made of cord is knitted according to an individually designed pattern (it is better to take a round napkin as a basis).

Modular cord carpet

The only difference here will be that:

  • First, it is not a ring that is knitted, but a chain with rises (VP) with double crochets (CCH) knitted into them on both sides. Further on the same principle.
  • on the sides of both faces you just need to knit a dc. At the ends - knit semicircles, where each row should alternate with an even knitting and a semicircle. The result should be an oval-shaped carpet, the length of which will directly depend on the length of the chain of rises.
  • To create the central part of the carpet, there is no need to cast on a chain of air loops; you can simply wind the end of the cord around two fingers, then remove the loop and knit the required number of stitches inside it.

Volumetric cord carpet

In the classic version, the first row is approximately 20 double crochets. Further - according to the scheme. Due to the fact that the last row is usually made with a pattern, the cord rug will take on a clear shape, reminiscent of a flower. Giving the product a semicircular shape is achieved by knitting half of the required quantity (DC), then the fabric is turned, knitted with a rise and the second row is knitted. That is, straight and return rows are knitted.

A square rug can be knitted using the granny square method: using simple double crochets and chain stitches. Aesthetics here are achieved by combining and changing the colors of the cord.

A large product can be knitted using the patchwork method. First, several square bases are knitted, which are then sewn together.

The carpet has a relief pattern, which even provides a massage effect for the feet. The diameter of the carpet is 1m.

On my own behalf, I will add that on the Internet you can find video courses and descriptions of knitting this carpet, which is quite popular.

But many needlewomen would be interested in the scheme. I found this on the website https://www.p-an-da.com/2014/11/crocheted-rug.html

Where to start

Polyester cord flooring begins with the selection of materials and tools. Polyester threads are synthetic and consist of polyester and have a springy, elastic structure.

Advantages of polyester cords for knitting carpets:

  • delicate texture;
  • elasticity;
  • the fiber is stronger than that of cotton cord;
  • durability;
  • no deformation during long-term use;
  • the ability to produce products with unusual openwork relief;
  • the thread is not subject to fading in the sun, does not produce static electricity and does not collect dust;
  • after stretching, the threads retain their original shape;
  • presented in a wide range of colors;
  • the composition is easy to process and make carpets and other accessories;
  • the material is moisture resistant, does not absorb water, and resists the formation of mold;
  • environmental friendliness;
  • retain color after washing.

When choosing a cord, you can purchase a product with or without a core. Braided cords retain their shape, the fabrics are more durable, but the threads are suitable for experienced craftswomen. Models made from simple cords are easier to make, but are less strong, not as durable and hold their shape worse.

When selecting a cord, the diameter is determined. The best option is 4.5-5 mm. However, the choice may vary depending on the design and size of the selected canvas model.

The work will require product diagrams and descriptions of the stages and techniques of execution; experienced craftswomen can create an original composition. Products can be knitted using hooks or special frames and nets. For round-shaped canvases, hooks No. 4-5 are needed, rectangular and square with a three-dimensional pattern - No. 5-6.

Carpet made of cord "Grand"

The “Grand” carpet has a diameter of 2.3 m. Cord consumption is about 2200 m. The weight of the carpet is 9.5 kg.

This rug looks great in both the living room and the bedroom. It can be presented as a housewarming gift or for any other occasion.

I couldn’t find a pattern for the “Grand” carpet, but there are quite a lot of descriptions on the Internet.

I want to say that for some reason many needlewomen are looking for patterns for these particular carpets. They are beautiful and magnificent, no doubt, but it is quite possible to use the pattern of any napkin and knit your own unique carpet from a cord. Check out new patterns for knitting rugs.

Assistant at work

Patterns for all kinds of crocheted rugs are very popular today; many needlewomen look for them on the Internet, and more experienced ones create their own patterns. We invite you to familiarize yourself with some options for crocheting cord rugs.

The first rug pattern, called “Magnificent,” is perhaps the most popular. This carpet is textured, so you can knit it for your bedroom or bathroom, because it has a massage effect.

Such a carpet takes approximately 2 skeins of cord, which is equal to 400 meters. The diameter of such a carpet is 1 meter.

The next carpet is “Grand”:

This oval-shaped rug is knitted from polyester fiber, which allows it to be durable and moisture-resistant, and also keep its shape perfectly even after numerous washes. Its knitting pattern is shown in the photo below. To make it you will need 700 meters of polyester cord, diameter 2-2.5 meters.

A carpet made using the “Grand” technique is distinguished by the fact that it is very flexible and easy to transport and does not take up much space when folded in a closet.

You can also knit an oval carpet as follows:

The “Sun” rug will look great in a bright bedroom or in the country house. It requires a cotton cord.

You can also knit a “Popcorn” rug and put it, for example, in the nursery - a relief rug will not let your baby get bored, because he will ask you to count the small balls! And what amazing tactile sensations your baby will experience, especially if you take cotton material.

Knitted carpets fit perfectly into any interior if they are correctly selected in color and texture. You can also use doily crochet patterns to make a cord rug, these patterns are also suitable for this activity.

Flat crochet cord

Such laces can often be found for knitting winter hats or laces for mittens, however, this weaving can also be found in many other applications. We proceed according to the following algorithm.

  1. We cast on two air loops.
  2. We pass the thread through one loop.
  3. do not tighten the product and knit two loops again.
  4. Repeat the thread through one loop.
  5. Continue to the desired length of the cord.

IMPORTANT: if there are no errors in the algorithm, then the entire product will look the same, both from the front and from the back.

As we see in the examples, there is nothing difficult in making such laces. Surely you already have ideas for their use, however, we recommend not stopping there.

Features of material and product care

Polyester cord is a material made from synthetic fibers, mainly polyester. Its main qualities are strength and elasticity, that is, a mat knitted from it will stretch and shrink slightly without deforming. Also, the finished product will have high qualities of moisture resistance and softness.

This material is great for knitting carpets and rugs, runners, bags and other products that can be washed in a machine or by hand at a temperature not exceeding 30C°. Finished products should be dried on a horizontal surface, completely unfolded.

Thus, whether it is a simple rug or complex relief carpets, knitting such products is also wonderful because after a short period of time you will see the result of your creativity. This motivates beginners and inspires craftswomen to further create.
