Knitting socks: 100 photo examples of how to knit simple and beautiful socks

In ancient times, needlework was a purely male activity. It was rare for a woman to do it. Mostly men knitted socks, slippers and other varieties of them. Women had other things to do and care about – children and cooking.

  • Over time, socks have changed radically, they began to be used to emphasize taste, style, beauty, and not just to warm the feet.

There are many varieties of yarn, and sock knitting patterns themselves have changed for the better over the centuries. Despite the presence of weaving machines and purely factory tailoring, manual labor is still valued.

And from the many options you can always choose the one you like and knit beautiful, stylish, warm socks with your own hands.

What can be tied

There are various videos of knitting socks that help you clearly understand what’s what, what’s needed and how it’s done. Various master classes are held.

The modern era allows you to access any information. There would be desire, time, mood.

You can knit socks of any model and configuration:

  • In a spiral;
  • Five spokes;
  • With various geometric patterns;
  • Two knitting needles;
  • Foot socks (slippers);
  • Knee socks;
  • Boots;

The easiest way is to knit socks on two knitting needles. The rest will require skill and a certain perseverance.

Where to begin

To knit socks we will need multi-colored yarn and medium-sized knitting needles. Depending on personal preferences, there may be several shades of thread (usually 2-3 are enough).

As for the heel, it can be tied in many ways. The most popular are straight, circular and boomerang. They differ from each other in the peculiarities of the set of loops and the alternation of rows (front and back).

Before you knit something, you need to decide on the sizes. They can be obtained either by measuring the foot, or by calculating the necessary parameters using the formula: (shoe size/3)x2.

When the dimensions become clear, we proceed directly to the process of knitting socks.

Let's look at it step by step so that every beginner can understand how this is done:

  • First we cast on 22 loops;
  • We knit a 1X1 pattern (you should get 15 rows or 40 mm in length);
  • Then - the front surface. We knit the same amount, 40 mm;
  • When the back part is tied, we move on to the heel;
  • We make decreases according to the width of the row (we knit loops together (2-3) and the penultimate two);
  • We do this until there are 12 loops left;
  • Now we add the front loops from the edge loops, but don’t touch the wrong side;
  • We get 22 loops;
  • Heel – formed;
  • We knit the foot (80 mm with a stockinette stitch pattern, alternating rows of colors in random order);
  • By decreasing and adding loops, we knit a sock;
  • To complete, we connect the last and first loops with the edge loops (the upper part of the sock with the sole), knitting 80 mm;
  • There's a cuff left. We knit it from the front side using the stockinette stitch pattern (connecting the front and back of the sock);
  • To complete the sock, knit a 40 mm elastic band;
  • We knit the second one in the same way.

Necessary materials:

  • half-wool yarn;
  • knitting needles;
  • pins.

Step-by-step description of the process:

  1. To knit socks we will need knitting needles size 2.5. Depending on the size of the foot, we cast on the required number of loops.
  2. We start knitting with an elastic band and cast on 192 loops on the knitting needles.
  3. Since we are knitting openwork socks on 5 knitting needles, we distribute 192 stitches evenly across 4 knitting needles. The fifth should be free.
  4. We knit one row, connecting the knitted product into a circle. At the beginning of one row we place a colored separator or secure it with a safety pin.
  5. We will knit the openwork pattern according to the pattern.

  6. We perform the first circular row completely with facial loops.
  7. Next, we knit each row according to the pattern. By the 10th row we have 48 stitches left on our knitting needles.
  8. We continue to knit 5 more rows along the pattern repeat.
  9. We knit the intermediate row with facial loops.
  10. Let's start knitting the openwork according to the pattern again.
  11. We knit to the desired height and knit another 10 rows in the round with knit stitches.
  12. So, we knitted to the beginning of the heel. We knit the row again with facial loops and repeat one row of the openwork pattern according to the pattern.
  13. We knit the next paired row with purl stitches. And again we repeat the openwork. Only now we knit the second row of the pattern.
  14. Alternating knit, openwork, purl and openwork rows, we knit the heel until one repeat of the openwork pattern is knitted in height.
  15. We look at the size of the sock, the openwork pattern should be repeated about three times.
  16. Next we knit the heel turn. At this point, we have 24 loops left on our knitting needles.
  17. In the first row we knit 14 stitches, knit 2 stitches together, knit 1 stitch and turn the sock to the opposite side.
  18. We start the second row by removing the loop, knitting 5 purl loops, 2 purl stitches at the same time, 1 purl stitch and proceed to knitting the third row.
  19. We remove one front loop without knitting. We knit 2 stitches simultaneously with knit stitches, tilting to the left, knit one knit stitch and proceed to the 4th row.
  20. We remove the first loop, then we knit purl to the first loop, where there is a gap. We knit 2 loops at the same time purlwise, 1 purlwise.
  21. We repeat this algorithm, starting from the first row, 2 more times. If the sock size is larger, then we will repeat the rapport 4.6 times respectively.
  22. We leave an unknitted loop on one edge, carefully remove it and leave it as is.
  23. We continue to knit according to the following pattern: remove 1 loop, knit knit stitches to the hole, two knit stitches at the same time, tilting to the left.
  24. In the second row, we remove the first loop, and then we knit purl stitches until the gap, we simultaneously knit 2 purl stitches and knit another purl loop.
  25. To knit a wedge, we must have 14 loops on our knitting needles. We transfer them to a large pin. Then we continue knitting according to the pattern.
  26. Socks need to be sewn at the toe.
