How to make new things out of old things: 50 ideas

Elegant vest dress

If you have an old jacket from your dad or brother in your house, we suggest transforming it into a stylish piece of women's wardrobe.

To create a trendy item with your own hands you will need:

  • Man's jacket;
  • scissors;
  • satin ribbon;
  • sewing machine;
  • pins;
  • threads

Carefully cut off the sleeves from the jacket.

Be sure to remove the shoulder pads to make the product look more feminine.

Fold the fabric inward on the sleeves.

We secure this position of the fabric with pins.

Sew a satin ribbon along the diameter of the sleeve on the inside.

We use a satin ribbon as a belt to highlight the waist.

Ideas

Let's think about what kind of crafts we could make from old things with our own hands.

  1. An unusual wall clock, the dial of which is decorated with disposable forks and spoons.
  2. A panel of multi-colored buttons of different sizes.
  3. Animal figures made from plastic bottles.
  4. DIY crafts from old clothes: an organizer made from pockets from jackets and jeans sewn onto a piece of denim, curtains made from scraps.
  5. A dressing table on a stand or a wall-mounted bar from an old suitcase.
  6. If you wash deep cans and poke holes at the top edge with an awl, they can be hung in a row on hooks, forming a convenient storage for screwdrivers, wrenches, markers, and pencils for the garage.
  7. Plastic buckets can be used for growing plants on windowsills, and their lids can serve as stands for these pots.
  8. If you cut off the necks of plastic bottles, you will get an ideal container for growing tomato seedlings for the garden.
  9. Cut off the sides of old canisters, place them in a row on a shelf in the garage, and you will have a large number of drawers for tools, various parts, and rags.
  10. Glass jars with screw-on lids make excellent storage for screws, nails, and self-tapping screws. You just need to screw the lids with screws from the underside of the wooden shelf, and screw the jars with fasteners onto the threads from below.
  11. You won’t believe it, but even old unnecessary crutches can be used, from which craftsmen have learned to make bookcases, connecting the crutches at the top with a tapering side. It will not be difficult to cut the shelves to the desired size and secure them to wooden supports.
  12. Wine corks make original keychains; you just need to somehow secure the ring in the cork array.

Every mother can create a cute baby dress at minimal cost. To do this, you just need to show your imagination or use the idea presented.

To do this, we will prepare the following materials:

  • textile;
  • scissors;
  • pins;
  • sewing machine.

Start day, separate the bow and cut off the bottom of the T-shirt.

We measure the required length of fabric to create a full skirt. Be sure to take into account a few centimeters for the seam. We fasten the two parts with pins.

We sew the two parts to each other using a sewing machine.

We decorate the bow with fabric and sew it to the new dress.

Stylish denim shorts

You've probably heard many times that you can repurpose old jeans into shorts. This is true and everyone can do them on their own. It is important to take into account some nuances and use current decor. This is the only way the shorts will be truly fashionable.

Ripped shorts

This style is perfect for walking with friends, as well as for relaxing on the seaside.

To make your own shorts you will need:

  • jeans;
  • nail scissors;
  • stationery knife;
  • chalk or pencil.

We try on jeans and mark the appropriate length with chalk or a pencil.

The most important thing is to cut the jeans beautifully. That's why we suggest doing more tears with your hands to make the shorts look a little sloppy.

We make a small cut from the outer edge of the shorts, then move them a little a few centimeters and tear them further.

We take out the white longitudinal threads with a stationery knife.

On the finished shorts, we make abrasions using cuts in the designated places and process the edges.

For an even more casual look, we recommend washing your shorts in the washing machine.

Shorts with lace insert

Plain jeans don't look as impressive as shorts with lace inserts.

For sewing you will need:

  • jeans;
  • lace ribbon;
  • pins;
  • threads;
  • centimeter;
  • scissors.

Select the appropriate length and cut the jeans.

We make cutouts in the front to make the lace inserts stand out more.

We take out the threads to achieve the effect of negligence.

We attach the lace to the jeans with pins, and then sew it on.

Shorts with lace patches

Elegant summer shorts are a great choice for true fashionistas.

To create, we will prepare the following items:

  • old jeans;
  • beautiful lace;
  • threads;
  • pins;
  • scissors;
  • needles.

Fold the shorts in half and measure the required length. Then cut off the excess fabric.

We cut out beautiful patterns in the form of flowers from lace. We distribute them evenly and secure them with pins.

We sew the parts with thread so that the seams are not noticeable.

Lovely, fashionable shorts are ready!

The second life of obsolete things

Coco Chanel loved to repeat the witty phrase that fashion should be understood as something that constantly goes out of fashion. Frivolous extravagance became the reason that huge quantities of goods produced for the hot trend became useless to no one the very next season and went to landfill.

But this could not go on forever. Enormous resources were spent on the production of things that quickly went out of fashion, and nature’s patience is not endless. In response to this challenge, developed countries have seen a rise in demand for clothing, footwear and personal accessories made from old items and recycled waste.

Pens made from cardboard, glasses frames made from recycled plastic, sneakers made from old tires or plastic caught in the ocean, crafts made from things, and remade vintage bags have become a real fetish that costs a lot of money.

Unusual headband made of ties

A stylish hair accessory with a bow is what will be popular in the summer of 2021. We suggest making it yourself from scrap materials.

We will prepare the following materials:

  • two ties;
  • scissors;
  • hoop;
  • glue;
  • clamps.

Choose a tie to decorate the hoop and cut off the narrow edge.

We thread the hoop into the tie and cut off the second part.

We glue the edges of the tie on the hoop and use clamps for better fixation.

We use the second tie to create a beautiful bow. To do this, cut off a wide part of the material.

Glue the edges of the tie and leave it for a while.

We give the workpiece the shape of a bow.

Cut another part of the first tie to secure the bow.

We connect all the details. A stylish and unusual hoop is ready.

Beautiful handmade bag

Even a broken umbrella can be remade and created something truly worthwhile. For example, an elegant bag. Interested? Then read on.

For the remodel you will need:

  • umbrella;
  • lightning;
  • leather handles or an old bag;
  • threads;
  • scissors.

We disassemble the umbrella into its components and wash the material.

We cut out the shape of the future bag and draw circles on the surface in a chaotic manner. You can use any container or compass.

We make narrow strips from leather or from an old leather bag.

Sew the blanks over the previously marked circles.

Cut a long strip and sew a zipper to it.

We connect the parts and sew leather handles to them.

If desired, you can make an internal pocket.

Crafts from old clothes and shoes

Many of us often find a home in our closets with things that we don’t wear – something has gone out of fashion, and something is simply tired or has lost its aesthetic appeal. Let's see what useful crafts can be made from old clothes?

Shirt bag

In any man’s wardrobe there is probably an old shirt that has long been “written off”, but it would be a pity to throw it away. But you can make a variety of useful things from a shirt - for example, sew a bag.

To sew it, you will need: a shirt, lining fabric that will ensure the strength of the product, you can also use a boring tie for decoration. To begin, draw a template on cardboard of what the future handbag will look like, cut it out, and transfer the sketches to the main and lining fabrics.

Next, we cut out, sew together the front fabric, and sew separately prepared handles and a fragment of a tie to it. When all the elements are attached, you can sheathe the workpiece with lining material. So our spacious handbag is ready!

Decorative sweater pillows

Soft, comfortable sofa cushions can be sewn from sweaters. Draw on paper the desired shape of the product - let it be a flower, a star or a fluffy cloud.

Cut out the template and pin it to the sweater, inside out. Using the template, we cut out two halves of the future pillow and sew it together, leaving a small gap through which we fill the product with padding polyester or any other soft fibrous material. Sew the pillow until the end. You can further decorate the craft, for example, by sewing on parts of an animal’s face cut from the wind.

Cat house made from old T-shirts

To make a cute house for your mustachioed pet, you will need two old T-shirts (one of them can be replaced with a pillowcase), thick cardboard, two pieces of metal wire and tape.

We cut out the bottom of the house from cardboard (plywood), wrap it with one T-shirt (pillowcase), and turn the sleeves inward. To make the cat comfortable, you can put insulation in the form of foam rubber or a flat pad. We give the pieces of wire a curved shape and fasten them together crosswise at the top point, fixing them with tape. Next, the ends of the wire must be connected to the corner areas of the bottom.

Now we take the second T-shirt and simply put it on the structure, pull all the hanging elements under the bottom of the house and secure it with a pin. The neck will serve as the entrance to the cat's home, for which she will certainly be grateful to you.

Beautiful flowerpots made from old shoes

Original flowerpots made from old shoes can wonderfully decorate not only a country house, a plot of land, but also a city apartment. This can be done in two ways - use shoes as a stand for a small flower pot, turning it into a flowerpot, or plant plants directly in old shoes or boots. In the second case, not just any shoes will do, but leather or rubber ones, which will last much longer.

Take care of the drainage system - to do this, you need to make holes in the sole and place the flowerpot on a tray where the water will drain. Shoes can be left in their original form or decorated - painted in bright colors, painted, or varnished.

Denim skirts

Denim skirts are a real hit of 2021. Moreover, it is not at all necessary to buy a new one, because you can transform the skirt of your mother’s youth.

You will need:

  • denim skirt with buttons;
  • pencil;
  • scissors;
  • cardboard blank;
  • sewing machine;
  • needles and threads.

Starting from the middle of the skirt, we trace the cardboard template prepared in advance.

We cut off the excess fabric along the marked line. We do not process the edges, as slight negligence will be in fashion.

The second option for remaking a denim skirt also does not require much effort.

We determine the optimal length of the skirt and cut off the excess fabric.

We apply the fabric to ourselves and mark the darts on the upper part of the skirt.

Fold over the raw edge and sew it on.

This beautiful skirt is ideal for creating summer 2017 looks.

Open back jacket

If you no longer want to wear your jacket, we suggest you repurpose it into a stylish piece that will definitely attract attention.

For this you will need:

  • blazer;
  • elastic band;
  • scissors;
  • pins;
  • sewing machine.

We cut the back of the jacket exactly in the middle.

Fold the cut edges a few centimeters on each side and secure with pins. The width just depends on how open you want the back to be.

We hem the edges using a sewing machine.

We cut off three elastic bands and attach them with pins to the jacket.

We sew each of them on a sewing machine.

A beautiful, spectacular product is ready. Wear it for evening outings, dates and outings.

Bath - a man-made pond

If during the renovation process it is planned to replace an exhausted bathtub with a more modern one, the old bathtub can be used as a water-tight bowl for a small pond. You will need to tightly plug the drain hole, deepen the bath into the ground, having previously prepared a small pit.

Plant the resulting pond with perennials, ferns and shrubs to breathe life into the composition. The result will be an original element of landscape design.
