Making flower stands with your own hands, tips for beginners

How to arrange greenery so that it does not become a source of unnecessary worries and decorates the room, how to use improvised materials to make stands, what tools are needed for this - all this is in the article.

You will learn:

  • non-standard ways of using common things to organize plants;
  • what type of stand is best suited for certain colors;
  • Consistent and easy to follow instructions for assembling plant stands.

Types of Plant Stands

It is not difficult to purchase a stand in a store that will cope with the functions assigned to it. But the appearance of the majority leaves much to be desired, and one cannot dream of individual characteristics that meet the needs of a particular buyer. Therefore, the way out of the situation is to make a flower stand with your own hands.

The first step is to decide which stand is suitable, and for this you need to know what types of designs exist.

  • By location: mounted, floor-mounted, mobile. Hanging stands that are attached to the ceiling or walls save space, but are only suitable for small flowers. Creating the effect of floating plants or replacing familiar paintings, they look original, but can complicate plant care. After all, the availability of domestic fauna is decreasing. The solution is to choose unpretentious flowers for the upper tier that require infrequent watering, and get a ladder or stepladder if the plants are located higher than at arm's length.

Wall mounted glass shelf Floor
stands are a universal and traditional placement option that is appropriate if the room has sufficient space. Flowers are suitable only for places with sufficient lighting, which complicates the placement of other objects in the room. In a small room, having to place a plant in a floor stand can be a real challenge.

The third type of flower stands are mobile, which are easy to move around the room thanks to wheels and compact sizes. Such stands simplify the cleaning process and allow you to change the interior design.

  • By capacity: single, double and multi-seat. The choice of stand according to this criterion depends on the number of flowers in the house. Collecting all the plants on one spacious stand, creating a green mini-oasis, is an interesting solution that also makes caring for them easier.
  • By design: forged, wicker, bent, racks, shelves, bookcases... The choice of design is dictated by personal preferences and compatibility with the interior. But when choosing a stand for a heavy flower, consider its strength and stability.

Materials used to make flower stands

The most common materials for stands are chipboard and fiberboard. Such racks are lightweight, affordable, and available in a wide range of designs and styles. But they cannot be called durable. The operation of stands made of chipboard and fibreboard in rooms with high humidity is difficult. Flower stands made of natural wood will cost much more, but with careful handling they will last for several decades. The combination of wood and green plants is visually a win-win.

Wooden stand from a box

Metal stands are considered the most reliable, capable of supporting huge flowers. It is almost impossible to make them at home without having the skills to handle the tool. Wooden and metal stands, even those treated with protective compounds, should not be exposed to prolonged direct exposure to moisture.

Plastic flower stands are considered a budget option, but even among them it is possible to choose current models. For example, transparent stands will harmoniously fit into a high-tech or loft style. But they are only suitable for miniature flowers. Artificial rattan will be a worthy alternative to plastic. And the natural rattan, from which the shelves are also made, is tropical palm wood. Despite its sophistication and apparent fragility, this material can withstand heavy loads.

Glass stands for plants in their pure form are rare. Shelves are mostly made of tempered glass, and supports are made of wood or metal.

A stand made of wood and glass will fit into any interior

The least labor-intensive option for home use is to make racks from scrap materials that do not require careful processing and installation.

How to make a flower stand: a review of instructions for different materials

Original flower stands can be easily made from scrap materials that are stored in the basement or attic after the last renovation. It is possible that you will have to purchase some components. However, this is a minor expense. In this section we bring to your attention several models of shelves for indoor plants that are easy to make with your own hands.

DIY flower stand made of wood: equipment, material and step-by-step instructions

A DIY wooden flower stand can have different designs. Let's consider a model that will fit originally into both rustic and modern interior styles. Proceed to work only after making sure that all the components are at hand.

Prepare several long and short boards. Sand all edges thoroughly

Make markings on the boards along which the stands will be cut. Choose the dimensions of each niche yourself, since it all depends on the place where you plan to place this functional structure

Cut out each part according to the pre-designed pattern, immediately adjust the size, check the accuracy of cutting

Draw lines on the shelves along which grooves for perpendicular inserts will be cut.

After cutting, try the parts together; if they do not fit, increase the cutouts. Don't forget to trim all edges

Now each detail of the future shelf must be covered with stain and varnish on top. It is better to do this in stages, waiting until the previous layer has completely dried.

After drying, combine all the parts of the planned shelf. Those boards that are located vertically will serve to attach the canopies.

On a note! Experienced craftsmen recommend sanding the surface, vacuuming it and varnishing it again before assembly. When connecting joints, you can use wood glue.

Making a metal flower stand with your own hands

Metal flower stands for windowsills are often universal. They can also be used for installation on the floor. To prevent this design from scratching the coating on which it stands, silicone or rubber gaskets are placed on its legs. The editors of HomeMyHome bring to your attention video instructions for making the original “Fountain” design:

DIY wooden flower stands

Wooden racks are easy to assemble, but some carpentry skills will come in handy. The following materials and tools are needed: • boards and bars; • varnish/paint/stain; • screwdriver; • self-tapping screws; • brush; • electric drill; • ruler; • saw; • hammer; • screwdriver.

Single wooden plant stands

The general sequence of work, regardless of the design of the flower stand:

1. Draw or select a sketch and, in accordance with it, determine the dimensions of the parts. 2. Mark with a pencil the contours on the surface of the wood along which the parts will be cut. 3. Cut out the parts and sand them with sandpaper. 4. Assemble the parts into a single structure, using tools according to the situation. 5. Paint the finished plant stand or treat it with a protective compound.

Almost any composition is suitable for painting wood.

Wooden driftwood plant stand

A flower stand made of driftwood will become a functional interior decoration. You will have to work hard to find a trunk or branch of the desired shape, but the result will justify the effort. Strong driftwood is washed from dirt and dust using a metal brush, then cleared of bark and rotten areas with a chisel.

An obligatory step is drying the driftwood. Natural drying in a ventilated place takes 10-30 months, but at home the process is accelerated by drying the wood in the oven for 10-50 hours. After drying, work with driftwood in the same way as with other types of wood. In accordance with the sketch, its shape is improved, the surface is polished, and cracks are sealed with a special putty.

To ensure the stability of the structure, a base stand made of boards or bars is attached to it, and platforms on which the pots will stand are made from them. The final stage is impregnation of the driftwood plant stand with antiseptics, insecticides, and then paint or varnish.

Pallet flower stand

Ordinary pallets serve as material for flower beds decorating the garden and flower stands installed indoors. The tray for house plants is fixed to the wall or placed on the floor in a vertical position. For a wall stand, you will need to screw the hanging mounts to the back of the pallet. If you are planning a floor stand, then make supports to stabilize it. A less reliable option in terms of stability is to rest the pallet with flowers on the wall. It’s easy to assemble a stand from several pallets by folding them into a “fan” and fastening them together with self-tapping screws, and screwing wheels to the bottom for mobility.

Pallet as a basis for hanging boxes

Some types of pallets already have parts that will serve as shelves for pots. If these potential shelves are not available, then the design of the pallets is modified by screwing the boards in the right places. When the stand is assembled, clean and sand its surface, treat it with a primer and, after complete drying, paint or varnish.

The former pallet can hardly be seen in the bright stand

Drawer stand

The wooden box acts as a ready-made module for assembling the flower stand. What are the options? • By connecting several boxes together using self-tapping screws into a multi-story structure, you will get a spacious floor rack. • One box hung so that the bottom is in contact with the wall - a hanging stand that can really be made in a matter of minutes. • From four to five drawers fixed on the wall in a vertical position, you get a chest of drawers that is in no way inferior in functionality to a regular one. • Screw four legs, sold at a furniture store, to the bottom of the box, and you have a secure stand that can support a large flower. As in other cases, the surface of the plant stand made from boxes will require sanding and finishing.

This hanging stand will fit perfectly into a rustic style.

DIY glass plant stand

The lack of sunlight in mid-latitudes is felt not only by people, but also by plants. But putting flowers in a row on the windowsill is an irrelevant way to compensate for the lack of ultraviolet radiation. An interesting solution would be a glass shelf, the narrow parts of which are attached to the vertical internal slopes of the window. Determine its dimensions by measuring the length and depth of the window opening. Select the required piece of glass, preferably tempered, and if you can’t find it, professionals in a glass-cutting workshop will help. You can cut the glass for the stand yourself: just use a glass cutter, which is sold in all hardware stores at an affordable price.

Glass shelves are placed on the corners, which, in turn, are fixed to the slope with self-tapping screws. There are metal corners on sale that can be painted to match the color of the window opening if desired. There are also acrylic transparent corners. If you don’t want to work with glass, then the shelves themselves are made from similar acrylic.

What materials are they made from?

Human imagination is amazing. They make extraordinary things out of completely banal things. Or, on the contrary, they use materials that seem to be unacceptable for this type of product. And what’s interesting is that they are even better than the usual ones.

A tree trunk and water pipes can also be the basis for a floor flower stand

Metal

A floor shelf for flowers can be made of metal - forged or welded. Forging is not the easiest craft, so forged coasters can either be purchased ready-made or ordered from a workshop to suit your dimensions or according to your sketch. This is, of course, good, but not cheap. There is a type of working with metal called cold forging. With the help of a pipe bender and some other devices you can do interesting things. This is already an option for self-production. But the fragments will need to be connected by some method. Most often, welding is used for this. If you can, great. There are plenty of options. Can be made from a rod - round or flat. There are a dozen options in the photo below.

In most products, style is difficult to determine

You can find options from a profile pipe. Those who know how to weld metal can weld a base from a profile pipe, and stands for flower pots from a rod. There are very interesting models of metal flower stands in a modern style.

Metal floor stand - not necessarily curlicues

You can, as in the photo, use stainless steel pipes. This flower pedestal will fit into a modern style. There are spray paints that can give an interesting effect. If you age the paint, you can put it in a loft-style room. If you use paint with a metallic effect, you can fit into high-tech and other techno trends.

Original metal flower stands

Whatever one may say, when working with metal you need welding. Welding machines in private households today are not that uncommon. But not everyone has it. In principle, some materials can be done without welding.

You can also make a stand from leftover copper pipes

If you have leftover copper pipes, you can make a flower stand out of them. Copper can be bent, but where this does not work, soldering is required. But since tightness is not needed in this design, glue can be used. If you know how to cut threads, you can assemble them from old water pipes using fittings.

Wood

An equally common option is a wooden floor stand for flowers. Often there is one or more stands on one stand. Shelves are attached to the racks, on which flowerpots are placed. There can be only one stand on one stand, or there can be several. They are often directed in different directions.

Single-tier, two-tier, multi-tier wooden stands

There are “classic” options, more like whatnots. They can be assembled from varnished or painted wooden planks. The height, number and size of levels all vary.

Floor stand in the form of a shelf for a different number of flowerpots

In general, it’s quite a convenient thing if you have enough free space. If desired, lower levels can be backlit. Such shelves are good for seedlings if they have to be grown outside of a technical room. They look good and make it easy to care for plants.

If you want to do it yourself: a couple of drawings with dimensions

You can make a flower stand in the form of a ladder from wood. Moreover, the ladder can take up little space if the steps are directed along the wall. The option on the right, by the way, is made up of two corner shelves. In this form it is more convenient to make them - the support is more reliable. The option on the left is not only for flowers, but also for decorative things.

Flower stand in the form of a ladder for different occupied areas

A floor stand is often needed on a balcony or loggia. If there is a free wall, you can make it the full width. Here, again, it is more convenient to use wood.

Options for a balcony or loggia, but not only

You can make a structure from small wooden boxes. They can be screwed together with self-tapping screws - wall to wall, or using planks. Then you can come up with more combinations.

Racks and shelves. Only two components, but so many options. Floor stand for flowers has an endless number of variations

In general, wood is a very good material for DIY work. It is simple, especially if the design is not too complex. Nails or screws are not a problem even for those who are not very experienced.

Combination options

If the relationship with wood and metal does not work out, you can use materials that are used in the production of furniture. Furniture round pipe with various fastenings and laminated chipboard or MDF. These are the options that are popular among DIYers. Buying a pipe is not a problem. It is round, square, rectangular. Each option with different wall thickness, different size/diameter. Some are nickel plated, some are colored. The pipe is cut with a regular hacksaw into pieces of the required length. It is attached to the shelves using special flanges. There are also tees, crosses, shelf holders, etc. A set of accessories - for any request and any design. To assemble, you need a drill and a screwdriver or screwdriver. Drill - pre-drill holes for installing fasteners, screwdriver or screwdriver - for installing screws.

Assembled from furniture pipes and MDF or chipboard

As stands for flowerpots, shelves are attached to the pipe, which are most often cut out of laminated furniture chipboard. You can also cut them out yourself, then stick on the end edge tape. If you don’t want to tinker, you can order cutting and edging from a furniture shop. It's quite inexpensive. And the assembly is up to you.

Less common are baskets for placing glass pots. The glass is thick, multi-layered. In terms of operation, it will be more reliable than laminated chipboard, less capricious than wood. But you need to know how to work with glass. You need to make special frames or a seat. Although, you can just glue it on top. But it’s easier to order edge grinding from a glass workshop.

Floor stand with glass shelves

Glass can be colored or white, frosted or transparent. It is better not to use patterned ones - it will be more difficult to clean. In principle, it may not be glass, but transparent monolithic polycarbonate. Sheets are available in different thicknesses.

Unusual shapes

Extraordinary things can be made from the most ordinary materials. The floor stand for flowers is no exception. For example, a stand-stand on which you can place pots and hang flowerpots with hanging plants. Just? Yes. But only after I saw the picture.

Unusual shapes from ordinary materials

Or shelving in the shape of the letter "A". Stable design, easy to implement. Can be made in several versions. The shelves, by the way, can all be the same length, made according to the dimensions of the base (as in the photo) or have their own characteristics - “protrude” beyond the frame to different lengths.

Symmetry always seems attractive to us

You can make the floor flower girl symmetrical. It can consist of two halves, mirrored. As an option in the photo on the right. And it looks good against the wall. And on the sides of the passage or door it will be even more interesting.

Metal wire flower stand

Working with a welding machine to make a metal flower stand is too labor-intensive, and the finished product will be heavy and bulky. Cold forging technology will also help you make a metal flower stand with your own hands. It allows you to give the desired shape to rods and wires of any diameter using compact equipment: you can buy it ready-made or make it yourself. But it’s easier to purchase a ready-made forged stand, unless you are into blacksmithing.

Sketches of wire stands

We recommend replacing pieces of metal with wire up to 5 mm in diameter. Such a thin wire can be bent manually, without using a special tool. To make the metal stand stronger, provide more wire supports.

Draw a sketch of the stand, divide it into its component parts. A mandatory element is round blanks into which the pots are inserted. To strengthen them, wrap them with an additional layer of wire. When the components of the stand are ready, all that remains is to connect them by cold welding. This is a special glue for metal.

Preparing the necessary tools

When making a flower stand from any material, you will need basic drawing tools, such as a pencil, ruler (preferably a tape measure). To check the evenness of a surface, such as a shelf, use a level horizontally and a plumb line vertically. Depending on the material used to make the stands, a set of tools is selected:

  • Tree. To create a simple wooden flower stand with your own hands, you will need a minimum of tools: a hammer and nails or a drill. A circular (circular) saw is used to create a shape, most often round. Using a circular saw, you can cut a hole into which the flowerpot will be inserted. A plane will only be needed for sanding if the wood was untreated. A jigsaw allows you to cut out small parts and decorations, but this will require a lot of time and patience. To get the job done quickly and effortlessly, it is better to use electrical appliances. Their disadvantage is that they are not always available at home, and buying them at once is quite expensive. At home, the easiest way to work is with wood.
  • Metal. Working with metal requires serious training, including the availability of specialized tools. The parts are fastened using a welding machine. To cut the required parts, a cutter, jigsaw or file, or sometimes metal cutting scissors, are used. Drills and an electric drill will be needed to secure the structural parts. All tools must be made of durable stainless steel. When processing metal, it is important to observe safety precautions; welding is carried out only in a helmet. Working with the wire is quite simple; if desired, you can bend it with your bare hands. However, it is much easier, especially when working with a significant diameter, to use pliers; you will also need wire cutters or scissors for cutting metal.
  • Plastic is a fairly easily deformable material. Nippers, scissors or a hacksaw, a drill - this is the required minimum. To soften the plastic, you need to heat it, which can be done with a regular hair dryer or gas burner. If you choose the option of creating a stand from PVC pipes, then you may not need other tools with super-strong glue.

Stand made of plastic pipes

To assemble a flower stand from plastic pipes, you will need a minimum of technical skills. Prepare a sharp hacksaw, the plastic products themselves and the connecting elements for them - fittings. The planks from which shelves are made and acrylic paint will come in handy. According to the selected sketch, the plastic pipe is cut into pieces of the required size and fastened with fittings.

Based on the model of such hanging stands, a structure is made from plastic pipes

Several pipes, located as close to each other as possible and forming a flat surface, or planks laid on a plastic frame of the stand act as a shelf for the pot. If the standard white or gray color of the pipes does not fit into the interior, then paint the finished stand.

Hanging stands for plants are also made from pipes. The pipe becomes a vertical support for hanging pots, which is attached to the ceiling or to two horizontal supports.

The second life of familiar objects: unusual stands for plants

If you don’t want to make racks using a set of tools and purchased materials, take a closer look at the items you have on hand. Among them there are those that can turn into a flower stand.

Bird's cage

The fancier the shape of the cage that has become a stand for plants, the better. Antique bird houses are ideal, and if you place flowers climbing along the rods in them, you will get exclusive interior decor.

Elegant cage stands

Ladder

A sliding A-frame ladder with wide steps is a ready-made stand for house plants. If the steps are narrow, then place boards of the required size on them. Does this option seem boring? Using your imagination, you can use a ladder to make a ceiling frame for hanging flowers.

If you don't want to cut down a tree, use a ladder as a stand

Cornice

To avoid drilling holes in the window opening when arranging hanging stands in it, make a miniature airy flowerbed from a cornice. Secure flower pots to it using thin metal chains or ropes. A cafe curtain covering the lower half of the window will help hide your home from prying eyes.

The flowers on the cornice will definitely get enough sun

Fireplace

Rare types of flowers will withstand long-term placement on a real fireplace. But plants will become a harmonious filling for a false fireplace. Flowers are hung on a metal lattice, placed on the mantelpiece or inside the portal.

Flowers on the mantelpiece

Old kitchen chest of drawers

Flower pots in close proximity to dishes are a dubious idea. But the chest of drawers, which is no longer used to store cups and plates, will become a spacious stand for plants. If necessary, it will be possible to provide additional lighting for flower growth.

Furniture filled with flowers will not be ignored

Hooks

Any vertical surface or railing can become a stand for plants: just attach metal hooks to it, from which you hang pots.

Hooks allow you to change the arrangement of plants on the stand base

Cords and ropes

Mastery of the macrame technique opens up wide possibilities for creating hanging stands for plants. To make such products look current, knit them from multi-colored cords or fit them into interiors as spot vintage elements. If you have no skills in macrame, tie hangers from several crossed ropes.
