How to make a satin dahlia using the kanzashi technique
Kanzashi is a fascinating Japanese art of creating delicate hair ornaments from fabric and satin ribbons. This master class will be devoted to how to make dahlia kanzashi.
To create a kanzashi petal for a dahlia, you do not need any experience, just follow the instructions provided and you will definitely succeed.
You will need the following materials and tools:
- satin ribbon 2.5 cm wide,
- candle, matches,
- ruler,
- scissors,
- clamp (tweezers or the like),
- decoration for the center (not necessary - I have stamens),
- some felt of a suitable color,
- suitable material for the base (felt or wide satin ribbon of the same color, cardboard, plastic, etc.),
- hot glue gun or universal transparent glue “Moment”.
So, let's begin…
Fold the ribbon lengthwise, wrong side inward, exactly in the middle.
Cut off and seal the corner.
The photo shows that the cut corner is quite sharp. The sharper the corner, the smoother the petal turns out.
Round organza dahlia
Materials:
- organza,
- felt patch 4 cm,
- stamens,
- tools.
Cut out a template measuring 3x3 cm from paper, rounding the top edge. Using the template, cut out organza petals. This flower took me 53 parts. Melt the edge of the organza and pull it out a little while it is hot. At the base, fold the edges and melt them. On felt with a diameter of 4 cm we glue the first level, it consists of 9 pieces, then the second - 9 pieces and the third - 9 pieces.
The fourth and fifth levels of the dahlia consist of 4 petals. We will glue two more levels from below, 9 pieces each.
Let's make a hole in the center of the flower and insert a bunch of stamens and add leaves.
Kanzashi dahlias: MK according to Natalie variety with video master class
The dahlia is one of the most beautiful and majestic flowers, according to one version it was named after the king. Bright dahlia inflorescences attract attention and decorate not only the garden, but even the most modest vase. It’s a pity that you can’t admire these magical flowers all year round. This article will consider two microcontrollers for dahlia kanzashi.
But as always, a way out can be found. Using the kanzashi technique, needlewomen will be able to create incredible masterpieces with their own hands - dahlias from satin ribbons. Their beauty is in no way inferior to fresh flowers, and such creations can be used not only for interior decoration, but also for decorating clothes, hair accessories, brooches and many other things.
It is imperative to take into account that the work of creating dahlias is much more painstaking, requiring more diligence, patience and perseverance, but the result will greatly please the craftswomen.
Flower of sharp petals
To create the first flower you will need the following materials and tools : satin ribbons 2.5 cm wide and a small piece of ribbon 1 cm wide, tweezers, scissors, matches, a lighter or candle, glue and, of course, a soldering iron or a tool for burning children's crafts.
1) To get started, you need to cut the tape into pieces 6 cm long.
2) Bend the corners towards the center so that the wrong side is on the inside.
3) Fold the corners inward again.
4) At the base of the petal, cut off the excess and scorch it over the fire.
5) In the same way, you need to collect and singe, no more or less, 55 - 60 petals.
6) To secure the petals and create a flower, a base is needed; it can be cut from any fabric or cardboard if a rigid structure is required. The diameter of the circle is about 5 cm.
- 7) Let's start gluing the petals, starting from the edge of the base in a circle and moving towards the center.
- The calculated number of petals should make 4 layers.
9) The flower is almost ready, but you need to make the core. You can use one satin ribbon 1 cm wide for several lighter tones, but for a more voluminous and natural effect it is better to take 2 ribbons of similar shades. The closer to the center of the flower, the darker the ribbon should be.
- 10) Cut 2 pieces of tape 15 cm long and carefully use a soldering iron to make small cuts along the entire tape at any distance from each other.
- 11) Then the tape is folded along its entire length and twisted.
- 12) Next, for the core, you need to make another 7-8 petals using the above method, but 5 mm shorter than the main petals.
- 13) With the petals collected in a circle, fix the core with glue.
- 14) We collect another 7-8 main petals and glue them around the middle of the flower.
- 15) Add the bottom row - turn the dahlia over and fix the remaining petals around the base on the wrong side.
- 16) Finishing touches – coat the core with enough glue and assemble the flower. This is what you should get:
- Doesn't this flower look natural?
Variety "Natalie"
Dahlias of the Natalie variety are distinguished by a very lush and wide inflorescence. But despite the complexity and volume of the flowers, such dahlias can be made at home from ordinary satin ribbons.
- 1) For work you will need: a satin ribbon of any color 2.5 cm wide, glue, scissors, a candle or lighter, tweezers, artificial stamens (you can make your own from thin wire and attach beads to the ends).
- 2) It is necessary to prepare about 100 pieces of tape 5 cm long.
3) To create a dahlia “Natalie”, you need to correctly and carefully singe the pieces of tape so that they look like petals - to do this, you need to burn and stretch the upper part. This action must be carried out with all the details.
- 4) Then each petal needs to be formed into a narrow stem, for which the unscorched edges of the workpiece must be folded, and the base must be burned, thereby securing the petal.
5) We make the base for the flower from any dense fabric, in this case felt was used. On the circle you need to apply markings along which the petals will be laid out and glued.
- 6) The arrangement of the petals is shown in the photo:
7) In the first five rows, 16 petals should be glued in a checkerboard pattern, with the bases of the petals glued to each other without going to the center. This technique creates volume and splendor of the inflorescence.
6) We place the petals in the sixth row closer to the center, almost standing.
7) The seventh row begins the formation of the flower core. We glue the remaining petals in the middle along with the stamens. The petals can be folded and glued with the wrong side out. This way the flower will look alive and natural.
- The remaining petals and stamens can be placed in an armful in the middle, having first filled it well with glue.
- The result was a very beautiful and natural flower.

DIY kanzashi dahlia master class (photo and video)
Flowers made using the kanzashi technique are mainly used as spectacular hair decorations in the form of elastic bands, headbands, hoops, hairpins and ribbon bows. But you can also make a lush color of a dahlia or sunflower.
In today's lesson, we will look at several options for creating a spectacular dahlia from ribbons. Using the kanzashi technique, the dahlia turns out to be especially lush and beautiful. The step-by-step master class contains video and photos of the step-by-step process of making a flower.
Lush dahlia made of satin ribbons
This master class (MK) will examine the step-by-step process of creating a petal for a dahlia, as well as its assembly. It can be done quite quickly and simply. The lesson should begin, as usual, with the selection of the necessary materials and tools. So, for work, prepare:
- satin ribbon 2.5 centimeters wide in a suitable shade;
- soldering iron;
- ceramic tiles or glass;
- ruler;
- scissors;
- glue.
In order to make a dahlia from ribbons, cut the satin ribbon into strips nine and eight centimeters long, twenty pieces each, respectively. The resulting segments must be folded at an angle of ninety degrees. Next, you need to fold this element again. As a result, we get the following petal, folded along the front side, as in the photo:
The reverse side looks like this:
Next, on the front side we bend part of the petal towards the center, as shown in the photo:
At the next stage, we will need a soldering iron. We take a ceramic tile and solder it with its help. The photo shows better where to correctly carry out this process. You can also use a candle or lighter for these purposes.
Thus, we make the number of petals you need for your dahlia. The more similar blanks you make, the more magnificent your flower will look.
Next, the master class moves on to assembling the dahlia kanzashi. We are preparing a template, on the basis of which, using a soldering iron, it is necessary to cut out a circle with a diameter of four centimeters. This diameter of the circle will allow you to place about ten petals on it. After this, we sequentially begin to solder blanks of satin petals along the boundaries of the circle.
The first row consists of blanks made from nine centimeter sections in the amount of ten pieces. The next row is soldered among the first and consists of the same amount. This row is also soldered among the petals of the previous one. Next come five eight-centimeter petals, and the remaining two rows of five parts are fixed with glue.
This way you will cover the unsightly places left by the soldering iron.
This MK is completed, and you can admire what a beautiful dahlia from ribbons you can make from satin ribbons.
Dahlia with sharp petals
Another master class will show you the step-by-step creation of a dahlia with sharp-shaped petals. This lesson is step-by-step, which is especially suitable for beginners. Those who are just mastering the kanzashi technique.
To make a dahlia from ribbons, prepare:
- wide and narrow satin ribbon in suitable shades;
- scissors;
- soldering iron;
- glue.

- In this photo master class I want to show how I make a kanzashi dahlia from a 2.5 cm wide satin ribbon.
- My dahlia consists of 4 rows of petals (and two additional rows for splendor):
- 1st row - 15 petals (ribbon length 9 cm),
- 2nd row -13 petals (ribbon length 8 cm),
- 3rd row - 10 petals (length for ribbons 7 cm),
- 4th row - 6 petals (ribbon length 6 cm).
- Photo 1. I cut the ribbon for the petals and fold it as shown in the photo.
- Photo 2. When I fold the tape in the letter “g”, one edge of the tape overlaps the other, that is, the opposite edges are connected. I seal the petal at the bottom with a soldering iron.
- Photo 3. I solder it in two places with a soldering iron so that the petal has a beautiful shape. I also solder the petal at the bottom.
- Photo 4. I cut out the base for the dahlia with a diameter of 4 cm and glue the first row of petals.
- Photo 5. I glue the second row of petals.

Needle dahlia made from ribbon 2.5 cm
This dahlia comes in two varieties. In the first version, the flower petals look like needles, and in the second, we melt them to bend them a little.
Materials:
- satin ribbon 2.5 cm and 1.2 cm wide,
- square of tape 5x5 cm for the base,
- cabochon/stamens for the middle,
- tools to cut the corner of the tape: soldering iron/burner + metal ruler or tweezers, scissors + lighter.
To make a dahlia from a ribbon with sharp petals, we use 6x2.5 cm pieces, fold them in half and cut off the corner. This can be done with a soldering iron or burner, applying a metal ruler, or cutting off the edge with scissors, holding it with tweezers and melting it with a lighter. At the base of the part, fold two folds on the right and left to the center of the petal, and seal the base. This flower took 35 parts. Its assembly will be the same as in the second version of this flower.
For the second dahlia, I made smaller petals from pieces of 4.5x2.5 cm - 36 pieces.
We hold the slightly soldered edge of the petal over the fire so that it bends slightly. Cut a circle with a diameter of 4 cm from the ribbon; it will become the base of the flower. Glue the first row - 9 parts. Between the petals we glue the second row - 9 more petals.
The third level is 7 petals, the fourth is 6, the fifth is 5. From a 1.2 cm ribbon we will make the same petals and glue them to the center, add stamens.

Dahlia made of satin ribbons
The ribbon flower proposed in this lesson, made using the kanzashi technique, resembles a lush dahlia in appearance. You will not find such an original copy on sale; you can only make it yourself.
To do this, we present in detail all stages of implementation. The highlight of the product is the harmonious combination of shades: the color smoothly transitions from dark green to light green.
A bright dahlia will perfectly decorate a bag or belt, or become a decoration for hair or interior design.
To make a dahlia with a diameter of 14 cm, prepare the following:
- Dark green satin ribbon 2.5 cm wide - 2.4 m.
- Light green satin ribbon 2.5 cm wide - 1.5 m.
- Light green satin ribbon 2.5 cm wide - 1.75 m.
- Golden brocade ribbon 5 cm wide - 0.3 m.
- Decorative stamens with yellow tips – 15 pieces.
- Hot-melt gun and glue for it.
- Sharpened scissors with straight and curved blades.
- Lighter/candle.
- White or green felt - circle 4 cm in diameter.
Hair clip with a lush blue dahlia made of satin ribbons
The bright blue and white satin ribbon dahlia is designed to match a school uniform, but you can use other shades as a basis.
A lush flower made using the kanzashi technique is decorated with an original center with a rhinestone silver chain. The diameter of the finished product is 11 cm. The decor is too large for an elastic band, so it is better to make it on a clip. You can add two flowers to your ponytails, and then your hairstyle will not go unnoticed by others. If you have a short haircut, use bag decor.
- Materials for the flower
- Step-by-step manufacturing technique
Materials for the flower
To make one dahlia you will need a satin ribbon:
- 76 pieces of white color – 2.5*4 cm;
- 76 pieces of blue – 2.5*3.5 cm;
- 6 pieces of white – 2.5*3 cm;
- 6 pieces of blue – 2.5*2.5 cm.
And:
- white or blue felt base with a diameter of 4.5 cm - 2 pieces;
- felt rectangle white or blue 1*4.5 cm;
- blue half bead with a diameter of 14 mm;
- rhinestone chain;
- white felt base 3*3 cm;
- clamp 7.5 cm.
Working tools: thermal knife (you can get by with scissors), scissors, ruler, lighter, glue gun, tweezers, Crystal glue.
The thermal knife is an excellent assistant for novice craftsmen and is simply necessary for those who make kanzashi jewelry in large quantities. Its advantage is that the edges of the satin ribbon do not need to be processed with a lighter, and this is a significant time saver.
Step-by-step manufacturing technique
This dahlia is similar in assembly principle to the chrysanthemum from our other MK, but consists of one type of petals of two sizes. Using a thermal knife, cut strips of the size indicated in the list of materials. If you don’t have such a tool, treat the cuts with a lighter.
Take one piece of white tape and cut the corners on one side with scissors, giving it an oval shape. Using a lighter, treat a small section and stretch it in different directions with your fingers. Do this with the entire upper part of the petal and with the blue section.
Place the blue one on top of the white petal and align it along the bottom edge (for the convenience of beginners, you can solder two pieces together using a lighter). Fold one and the other corner to the center. Using the same method, make 72 large and 12 small dahlia petals with your own hands.
From a sheet of felt 1 mm thick, cut out a circle with a diameter of 4.5 cm. Stores sell ready-made bases of different sizes. The circle can be immediately divided into 12 equal parts for convenience. Glue one opposite the other. First there are four petals, then between the petals there are two more.
The second row of the dahlia also consists of 12 petals. Glue them between the petals of the first row.
Using the same principle, make the third and fourth rows of 12 petals. Each row retreating a little towards the center.
The fifth and sixth row of dahlia consists of eight large kanzashi petals.
Now use the small petals. Glue them between the larger pieces. Since the middle has shrunk and gluing has become inconvenient, you can use tweezers.
There are still 12 large dahlia petals left. Turn the flower over and glue them underneath. This will give the bright dahlia made of satin ribbons pomp and volume.
All that remains is to decorate the central part of the dahlia. Take a blue center with a diameter of 14 mm. Using hot glue, glue it to a 3*3 cm felt base. Then attach a rhinestone chain around it, measure out the required amount. This master class used 14 pebbles. Glue the chain with transparent “Crystal” glue.
Leave to dry, carefully cut with scissors and hot glue it into the center of the dahlia.
A beautiful, festive, airy dahlia using the kanzashi technique is ready. The final touch is attaching the clamp. If your hair is thick, you can use a wide elastic band. On sparse hair, such a voluminous flower will still look better on a hair clip.
If you need two hairpins, repeat all steps or make two symmetrical products at once.
For a little girl we recommend hairpins in the shape of dragonflies, and for high school girls – a set of hairpins with a tie.
A master class on making a dahlia from ribbons in the kanzashi style with her own hands was prepared by Svetlana Sorokina, commissioned by the online magazine “Women’s Hobbies”.
