Trends in bag fashion 2020-2021
What handbags are in trend today:
- bags made of wicker texture, which can be easily repeated from strips of old jeans, or you can crochet the base, and sew handles and pockets from jeans.
- bags with chain handles. We sew a clutch from old jeans, and buy a chain handle at the store.
- a shopping bag with a rigid shape like a “trunk” can also be easily sewn from old jeans. The main thing is to figure out how the bag will keep its shape.
- semicircular bags
- bag - bucket
- large flat clutches that fit on the palm
- small bags of original shape
- handbags, belt bags and clutches of unusual shapes
Where should I start?
We start collecting old jeans, preferably men's jeans, preferably large size jeans , because... they have a lot of usable space and fabric.
- Beautiful labels from old worn-out jeans, belt loops and pockets will also come in handy. Pockets are an important part of any bag. Pockets can be sewn both outside and inside on a lining. So pockets from old children's jeans will come in handy as a pocket for keys.
- Look at the photos of the finished bags, many of them creatively incorporate belts from old jeans
- Choose fabric for the lining.
- The clasp is an important part of any women's bag. Difficulties often arise with inserting a zipper, so we recommend paying attention to alternative fastening methods - hidden magnets, large beautiful buttons, buttons, etc.
- Handles are an important detail of the bag; the overall appearance and design of the finished product depends on it. In handicraft stores you can buy large wooden handles, thin chains, leather belts, whatever your heart desires. If you have mastered foreign shopping, then pay attention to the Aliexpress website, where you will find a very large selection of accessories for bags at competitive prices, here is an example of some of them
- If your goal is to sew a bag and save as much money as possible, then make the handles from old jeans, they can be beautifully decorated. Or, as an option, use old leather belts.

For alteration, you can take any jeans that definitely have nothing else to do in your wardrobe. Of course, the condition of the fabric should be taken into account: it should not be stretched, thin or have impurities that cannot be removed.
Straight cut jeans in larger sizes are more convenient for sewing. In this case, cutting the bag will be more convenient, and the number of necessary seams will be reduced.
What types of bags can be made from old jeans?
Denim is used to make spacious travel bags, practical backpacks for daily use, shopping bags for shopping, stylish clutches and miniature bags for keys and phones. Similar models are often found in the collections of famous designers.
Bag backpack
Backpacks made from old jeans amaze with their variety. These include simple models, hastily cut from one trouser leg with an attached strap, and complex designs with an abundance of pockets, compartments, inserted orthopedic backs and ergonomic straps. Of course, the manufacture of the latter requires certain knowledge and skills. But to sew a simple backpack, all you need is desire and old jeans. All that is needed:
- cut off the trouser leg;
- stitch along the bottom edge;
- tuck and hem the top edge to avoid thread shedding;
- sew a braid under the lace at the top of the backpack;

Large shopping bag
A bag for going to the grocery store will be an alternative to numerous bags.
This is a great step to show your individuality and at the same time make a feasible contribution to the fight against littering the planet with plastic bags.
For this model, handles of a ring or half-ring made of plastic and wood in tandem with a wide strap are ideal. Thanks to this solution, it can be carried in your hand or thrown over your shoulder.
The design can be very diverse, from two stitched rectangles to non-trivial ellipses with a stitched bottom and sides.
Miniature clutch
Despite their miniature size, these are the bags that require jewelry craftsmanship. After all, it is in them that it is necessary to combine all the details with special precision and lay perfectly even seams. Such bags necessarily require a pattern and precise calculations. They often contain frame inserts or parts are duplicated with high-quality adhesive material.
Don't despair if you don't have enough experience. Bags made from jeans require much less skill than tailoring, because there is no need for additional adjustments, stitching and fit. A good pattern, patience and meticulous execution and very soon you will become the owner of the treasured clutch.
What parts of jeans are useful for sewing bags?
Any details can be used in creative processing. The trouser legs are useful for sewing the main part of the bag. It's easy to swap patch pockets from jeans onto it. Often the bags are decorated with large inserts on the back of the jeans that were previously hip-hugging or on the front, along with a zipper and a “flag” indicating the brand.
Patterns for bags made from jeans
Before you start making, choose a suitable pattern. They can be simple or complex, it all depends on how much time you want to spend on it.
Big bags
Patterns for such models can be either simple or complex. As for the models, from bags resembling a wallet to bags with many pockets or accessories.
Miniature
Here you can consider a lot of pattern options. The popular size is A4, suitable for walking during the day and also in the evening.
Backpacks
A backpack is a fashion trend for 2021. There are patterns that allow you to make a handbag out of regular old jeans, transforming it into a briefcase and vice versa. So to speak, 2 in 1.
Making a bag for every day
Let's figure out how to sew a bag from old jeans with your own hands. So, to get started, prepare all the necessary materials, namely:
- Denim fabric.
- Needles, threads.
- Stapler.
- Centimeter.
As material for patterning a bag from old jeans, you can use a standard sheet of A4 paper or whatman paper.
At the beginning of work, make all the necessary drawings based on the shape and size of the bag you want for yourself. Next, carefully open the jeans and transfer all the necessary drawings to the wrong side of the fabric.
Please note that you should always leave a reserve length, usually 1-2 centimeters. Then you can start sewing the bag.
First you need to carefully sew the walls of the bag together; for this work we recommend using a sewing machine, because doing this yourself is quite problematic.
Once you have formed the seams, you can begin sewing the base of the bag. To do this, simply start connecting the 2 lower parts together, leaving space for the side walls in parallel.Note!

After the work has been done, you can form the walls. Begin carefully sewing them to the base, forming a square shape. The final part of the work will be the design of the handles.
DIY tote bag made from jeans
In everyday life you simply cannot do without a tote bag. This accessory can be used not only for shopping, but also for a trip to nature or even for work. In this case, the bag is made of jeans, which makes it especially strong and durable. During the work you will need the following:
- jeans;
- fabric for lining;
- scissors;
- threads;
- pins;
- sewing machine;
- iron.
Place the jeans on the work surface and cut off the bottom part. In this case, the size of the finished bag will be 40*35 cm. But if desired, it can be made of any size.
Carefully rip apart the side on which there is no finishing stitch.
We fold the two blanks with the front part inward and equalize the width. If necessary, align the jeans sections. Carefully grind down the side that will be the outer part of the bag.
A pocket is always appropriate, so for convenience we cut it out from the rest of the jeans. Place it in the center of the workpiece, as shown in the photo. Stitch the sides and sew on the pocket using a sewing machine.
We turn the workpiece inside out and stitch the bottom part.
Fold the bottom part as shown in the photo. This is necessary to form the bottom of the bag. We sew the corners equally on both sides. We iron the workpiece so that the resulting product turns out really attractive.
Carefully cut off the corners.
Turn the workpiece inside out. We turn the top edge of the bag just a few centimeters.
For convenience, we iron the top part and stitch it on a sewing machine.
Cut the waistband of the jeans to make handles. From the seam, which is located in the middle of the bag, we retreat literally 4 cm and attach the handles with pins.
We turn the entire product inside out.
Using the same principle, we make a lining from a piece of fabric or an unnecessary shirt. Please note that the side seam does not need to be sewn completely, as there should be room for turning it inside out.
We insert the lining into the bag with right sides facing each other.
Secure with pins or thread.
We sew on a sewing machine and turn the workpiece inside out.
We stitch the workpiece again where the pins are located.
The original bag made from jeans is ready!
Jeans shopping bag
I present the promised master class on sewing a shopping bag from old jeans. It’s better if the jeans are tight, then the bag will keep its shape better. It is very comfortable to use, durable, easy to wash (and beautiful). We all have old jeans, so it would be nice if we bought fewer bags.
1. I forgot to take a photo of the very beginning, so I took a photo from an old master class
We cut off the bottom of the jeans, which is usually worn, and measure up 45 cm. The finished bag is small - 40x35.
2. Rip out the side where there is no finishing stitch. The stitching, if any, will subsequently decorate our bag; these will be its side seams. 3. Fold face to face and equalize the width; when cutting the trousers, the back panel is wider than the front panel. You can leave it like that, then the side seams will go a little into the face, like here. But with such a bottom, as we will do today, it is better to level
We sew one side, the one that will be the face of our product
4. Cut out the lining (I have the lining from a shirt). I turned it over so that it would be easier to understand where the lining would begin. Don't forget about seam allowances. It’s not scary if the lining is a little larger 5. The pocket looks ordinary, but it’s convenient, especially since jeans almost always have them, why reinvent the wheel. I just cut it out and stitched it in the places where the rivets were placed by hand. Then stitch the second side 6. Stitch the bottom 7. It seems like I took a clear picture of how to fold the bag for the bottom 8. Stitch the corners, I measured 4 cm from the corner to the sides.. I forgot to say, it is necessary to iron, otherwise the work will not be neat! 9. Cut off the corners 10. You can already see what we are getting. We do the same with the lining 11. We wrap the lapel inside (I have doubts whether I call all things by their proper names, if it’s not clear, ask:) 12. I wrapped it, stitched it 0.5 cm and ironed it 13. Handles (from the waistband of jeans, I I don’t steam it, I just cut it) 36 cm long with allowances. Step back 4 cm from the middle seam and pin the handles with pins 14. Everything seems clear 15. Now turn it inside out 16. 17. The lining is ready, waiting in the wings. Do not sew the side seam completely, leave room for turning it inside out 18. Insert the lining into the inside out bag, it turns out face to face, it is desirable that the pocket on the lining is on the opposite side of the pocket on the bag 19. 20. Stitch! (I swept it first) 21. You can turn it inside out 22. Where the needles are, I stitched again along the existing seam 23. I hope everything is clear!
We wear it with pleasure! 24. 25.
Original bag made from old jeans

- jeans of different colors;
- scissors;
- lightning;
- cotton fabric;
- viscose napkin;
- cotton tape;
- threads;
- pins;
- sewing machine;
- doublerin;
- glue web;
- iron.
On the work surface we place jeans of different colors, but of the same density. We cut out blanks from them in the form of diamonds. We make a pattern as shown in the picture.
Place a viscose napkin on the work surface and place a glue web on top. We place the denim blanks in random order and iron them until all the parts are completely fastened.
According to the pattern, we cut out the necessary elements for the bag. We also cut out two additional long ribbons.
We cut out the same elements from cotton fabric to form the lining. We sew all the joints on the denim blank using a sewing machine.
If desired, you can apply adhesive dublerin to the back side of the mosaic. This will help strengthen the edges of the bag.
Let's start working on the pocket. With the wrong sides inward, fold the denim blank with the lining. We secure them with pins and sew them on a typewriter. We process all edges of the product with bias tape. Additionally, you can make decorative stitching.
Place a pocket on the lining and sew it on.
Let's move on to the main part of the bag. To do this, fold the side sections and stitch them with red thread. We repeat the same on the other side.
We put a lining inside the bag and sew it on a machine. We repeat the same with the bottom of the product.
We connect the bottom and the main part of the bag together using a seam. Finish the edge with bias tape.
From the wrong side we sew a cotton blank to the zipper. We sew the denim blank on the outside.
If necessary, you can cut off the excess part of the zipper.
We sew the side sections of the strap from the outside to the main part of the bag. We process the edges with binding.
An unusual handbag is ideal for evening walks and themed looks.
DIY bag from old jeans in half an hour: step-by-step instructions
Sewing a bag “in a hurry” does not require special skills; it is enough to know how to use a needle and thread and a sewing machine. However, it is quite possible to do without the latter.
The bag consists of two sewn rectangles made of denim. The lower part (bottom) is formed by stitching off the corners. Comfortable handles are made of similar material. To ensure that the inside of the bag is neat and not full of unfinished seams, it is lined with cotton. If desired, you can make a rectangular valve.
Required materials and tools
- Old jeans;
- matching threads;
- fabric for lining;
- needles and pins;
- sewing machine;
- ruler, measuring tape and right-angled triangle;
- scissors;
- Pattern.
Step-by-step instruction
- Open the jeans at the seams and iron thoroughly with steam.
- Apply the details of the future bag onto the denim, not forgetting the seam allowances (front and back halves + handles).
- Cut out 2 main parts of the bag from the lining fabric. The size of the cotton parts must exactly match the size of the denim parts.
- Cut out all the details.
- Duplicate all “denim” details with non-woven fabric.
- Combine the details of the denim bag. Pin with bobby pins along the bottom and side edges. Sweep away.
- Do the same with cotton items, with the only difference being that in the inside of the bag you should leave an area of approximately 10 cm in the side seam unsewn.
- Fold the handle parts (long rectangles) in half. Align the cuts and baste along the long side.
- Machine stitch along all basted areas.
- Turn the handles right side out. To make this operation easier, use a simple tip - sew a lace to the edge of the handle and attach a pin to it, and then thread it into the “jeans tunnel”. Now all that remains is to pull the cord, and the handle will begin to unscrew itself.
- Remove the basting and carefully iron the seams.
- In the bag blanks (both cotton and denim) form a bottom in the lower part. To do this, draw additional lines perpendicular to the line of the bottom seam, as if drawing corners. Please note that the length of the line corresponds to the width of the bottom in the finished product. If you want the bag to have a bottom that is 7 cm wide, then the hypotenuse of the angle should be 7 cm.
- Check the correspondence of the drawn lines; they should represent a mirror image of each other. Sweep away.
- Machine stitch. Remove the basting and press the seams.
- Combine the details of the bag (jeans) with the handles, folding them right sides and pointing down. Chip or sweep. If the design of the bag has a flap, baste it in the same way (with right sides facing each other).
- Insert the inner cotton piece into the resulting structure.
- Sweep the top cut, making sure that the valve and handles are inside.
- Machine stitch.
- Turn the product through the hole in the side seam of the inner part of the bag. And the bag is ready!

We sew a backpack with our own hands - a bag from old jeans
To sew a miniature backpack we will need:
- Jeans;
- Ruler;
- Sewing machine;

- Textile.
Work progress:
- Step 1. From the bottom of the old jeans, measure the desired height of the future product and cut it. Turn it inside out.
- Step 2. From the other part of the pants we make the bottom, having previously measured the dimensions.
- Step 3. Attach the bottom to the inverted section with pins. Stitch.
- Step 4. For the resulting bag, we make a lining for this: we measure the bag and make a pattern. We connect them with each other.
- Step 5. Attach the resulting lining to the base.
- Step 6. Measure 2-3 cm from the top of the product and stitch. There will be a lace there.
Advice! If you want to make an external finish, you can leave the lining 4-5 cm longer. After the lining is sewn to the base, fold the remaining fabric outward and stitch.
How to make a bag from jeans with your own hands
As mentioned earlier, to make a handbag you will need patterns, you can find them on the Internet, make them yourself, or if you already have an old bag that you liked, take it as a pattern.
But if you are a beginner, keep it simple. It doesn't require much effort:
- Step 1. Using the finished patterns, cut out the blanks. Knowing the proportions, you can reduce or increase the size, but if this is your first item, then it is better not to risk it and do everything according to the pattern.
- Step 2. Connect the bottom to the sides of the future bag and sew it together.
- Step 3. Combine the sides. To do this, we evenly connect the lines of the side parts and lay a seam.
- Step 4. To get a bulky bag. Sew the corner of the bag from the bottom.
- Step 5. Handles. They can be of various types, made from old belts, decorated with various rhinestones and embroidery. In this case, we sew the handles ourselves.
To do this, take two strips of the same length, fold them, turn the edges inward, and stitch them. Sew to the bag.
Children's bag made from old jeans
Next, we will look at how to make a children's bag from old jeans with our own hands. Please your child with an exclusive item made with love. An excellent option would be to create a comfortable and practical shoulder bag.
The work itself is very simple and does not require any special skills. First of all, cut off the very top part of the jeans, leaving a small margin of 3-4 centimeters at the bottom, which will serve as the bottom of the bag.
After the work has been done, connect the lower part with the stock, carefully sewing everything together. Inside the bag, remove numerous threads using scissors or a lighter.
It is important to be extremely careful during such work and not to damage the bottom of the bag itself, so that it does not tear in the future.
Next you will need a belt. You need to attach it to your bag so that it can be worn over your shoulder. You can finish the job by decorating the bag with all kinds of decorative stones, beads and other decorative ornaments.
As one of the decorations, we recommend using patterned stripes, which can be purchased ready-made at any fabric store.
Turn on your imagination
First you need to determine for what purpose the denim bag will be used. It can be for children for doll things or books, sports, beach, model, travel.

DIY bag made from jeans.
Tailoring options. Some useful tips for beginners:
- It is better to sew on denim using a sewing machine (this way the seams will look neater and the bag will last longer).
- If several types of jeans are used, then you need to select them of the same thickness and density.
- Do not cut off pockets and belts from trousers (they can play a leading role in the decoration of the accessory).
- Leather, suede, silk flowers, and metal items are suitable as additional decorations.
- It is advisable to choose fabric from 100% cotton and water that does not stain when washed (if you take deformable fabric, the seams will turn out wavy and not neat).
- To create a winter bag, it is allowed to use knitted parts, and for a summer bag, woven ones in the macrame style.
The best master classes with patterns
There are several basic workshops on patterning denim backpacks. They can be used by both professionals and those who decided to try sewing something with their own hands for the first time. But, despite the chosen sewing option, you need to follow some general recommendations:
- To ensure that the product keeps its shape, non-woven or lining fabric is used in its manufacture to strengthen the bottom.
- Hard non-stretch material is additionally sewn into the handles and straps.
- Before you start cutting, you need to think in advance where pockets, zippers, and decorative elements will be located on the finished product.
Simple backpack
This accessory is very easy to sew, since you don’t even need to make a jeans pattern to make it. It looks vaguely like a bag, but it’s quite roomy and doesn’t take up much space.
Simple backpack
To make a backpack, you should prepare all the necessary tools and materials in advance. After completing the preparatory stage, you can begin sewing the product. You need to do this step by step:
- Old jeans are taken and unnecessary material is cut off from them. The size of the planned backpack will depend on the length of the cut.
- The seams of both legs are ripped out from the inside. Then they are folded together and stitched so that the result is a fabric tube.
- The bottom of the product needs to be further strengthened. To do this, it is made in three layers. Teak spacers are inserted between the layers, and the entire structure is glued with non-woven material.
- The padding is cut out based on the size of the backpack and stitched from the inside.
- Shoulder straps are being made. A belt is ideal for them. But don't take it too hard. If there is no other one, then you can additionally hem soft inserts.
- A flap is made from denim and a button closure is attached. It is worth remembering that the pockets of jeans that remain on the finished item will play not only a decorative role, but can be used to store keys, a wallet and other small items.
Important! If a volumetric model is not needed, then there is no need for additional reinforcement of the bottom.
Backpack with decorative textile inserts
The backpack will look very original and beautiful if you complement it with various fabric inserts. Therefore, if you have unnecessary jeans and scraps of fabric in your apartment, you can sew them into a stylish accessory.

- Lace.
- Fabric of different colors and textures.
- Large button.
- Eyelets – about 6 pieces.
- Metal rings to secure the harnesses.
Backpack with decorative inserts
To start making a pattern, you need to have several blanks on hand:
- For the bottom of the backpack you will need an oval 27 × 16 cm.
- For the base of the product you need a rectangle 73 × 37 cm.
- For the straps you need to prepare two strips measuring 100 × 10 cm.

The backpack is made according to the following instructions:
- Patterns are made from three blanks: base, straps and flap. Scraps of multi-colored fabrics are sewn onto them.

Patchwork technique
The essence of this technique is to sew products from scraps of fabric, which allows you to create original and unusual things. Therefore, it is used to make backpacks from jeans with your own hands.
With this sewing method, you should stock up on jeans of different shades and textures. Both light and dark colors are suitable. If desired, you can use scraps of other material.
Patchwork technique
The process of making a backpack using the patchwork technique is carried out step by step:
- In order to understand how the flaps of different colors will be arranged, you need to make a pattern for the future product. If you are planning a small backpack, then you can take pieces of fabric measuring 13 × 13 cm, plus a margin of 1 cm for allowance.
- The base is cut out from serpyanka, taking into account the seam allowance. Then all the shreds should be laid out on it and carefully ironed. This will help avoid rough seams that will appear when sewing denim.
- The synthetic winterizer is cut into two parts. A serpyanka with pieces of denim will be sewn onto one, the other will be used to make the bottom.
- Additionally, the flaps can be decorated with grosgrain ribbon. It is stitched at the borders of the pieces, first horizontally, then vertically.
- Additional seams are secured with a zigzag stitch.
Additional Information. In the product, the additional parts are sewn together first, and then the inner parts.
Roomy model
The large size of a backpack does not always mean that it is roomy. This depends primarily on the cut of the item.
Roomy model
A large backpack is made according to the following scheme:
- The legs are cut so that the jeans are turned into shorts.
- The seams of the resulting shorts are ripped out on the sides.
- The front part is taken and placed on top of the back. They are pinned together to prevent the seam from shifting. Stitching is done along the waistband.
- The remaining trouser legs will also be used. One of them will be useful for making handles and harnesses, the second will be used for sewing the back of the product.
- The side seams are sewn.
- An old T-shirt can be used as a lining. Its neck is cut off and one side is sewn together to form a bag.
- The blank for the gasket is secured with pins and stitched.
- A valve is made from leftover fabric and attached to the back of the backpack. Buttons on pancake laces can be used as fastenings.
