The young princess and the little robber will be glad if outerwear appears in their wardrobe, unique in beauty and functionality - a knitted coat. Warmth and comfort combined with an original appearance, freedom of movement and durability of the product are the factors that make a knitted coat indispensable.

The coat, being outerwear, differs from other knitted items of this type in the density of the knitting and a looser cut. It is possible to have a lining or insulate the product with padding polyester if it is designed for colder seasons or tends to lose its shape. The yarn should be selected with medium density so that the product does not stretch under its own weight, but is also not too hard and inflexible. The item should not be too bulky so as not to limit the child’s mobility.
Coat options for girls
- trapezoid;
- direct;
- cocoon;
- flared;
- with hood;
- with raglan sleeves.
It is advisable to select a medium coat length for a girl, approximately at knee level. A product that is too long will not allow its owner to move fully, and a product that is too short will not be able to protect her from the cold. To create such a thing, stockinette stitch and garter stitch are suitable; coats with a pattern of braids or diamonds look beautiful. The fastener can be made along the entire length of the product or on two buttons; options for creating double-breasted models such as a jacket are possible.
The choice of colors is not limited; bright colors will please the eye, and light colors will add tenderness to the image of a young lady. When creating children's coats, you can fantasize with drawings, decorating the products with figures of men or animals, floral patterns, or a combination of yarn of various colors, alternating it with even stripes or a zigzag. Decorate models with tassels, fringe, fur, and add knitted cords, belts and patch pockets.
Choosing yarn for a coat
If you want to knit a children's coat, then you will need to choose the right threads. As a rule, outerwear is made using tight knitting.
It is advisable that the baby be able to wear a knitted coat for several seasons. And this, as we know, completely depends on the material.
- You can knit a coat from thick threads and put it on a lining to make the product more dense. This will allow the coat to maintain its own shape.
- Very thick threads are not suitable for a children's coat, as they will only make the product heavier, making it bulky.
- Also, a product made of thick threads, if there is a gasket, will sag due to its weight. You will have to periodically adjust the lining, which can cause the coat to warp.
It is important to choose the right yarn for your coat

Coat for a girl made of grass, knitted with knitting needles
A pink coat for a girl made from grass is the work of Larisa Samsonova. Suitable for a height of 93cm, the coat is a little too big to accommodate growth, but not very big.
Back
I cast on 56 loops. Knitted with an elastic band 6x4 (6 knits; purl) - 22cm. Then in the purl stripes I decreased 15 stitches in 2 steps = 41 stitches remained. We knit in stockinette stitch until the armhole is 12 cm. We make decreases for the armhole - 3,2,1 on both sides. We knit 14 cm to the shoulder. 7p hangers. 15 sts remain on the neckline - without closing, transfer to circular knitting needles.
Shelf
We cast on 30 sts with a 6x4 elastic band. We knit 22 cm. We decrease in purl stripes in two steps 9p = 21p. We knit in stockinette stitch up to the armhole 12 cm. We make a decrease for the armhole - 3,2,1 (-6p). 15p left. We knit to the shoulder 14 cm. Shoulder 7p. 7 stitches remain for the neck. We make the neckline in 4 steps - 3,2,1,1p - on circular knitting needles.
Neck
On an additional knitting needle 29 sts (15 back, 7 shelves each). Using a 1x1 rib, we knit a stand-up collar for 6 rows. Then for the hood we evenly add 45p = 74p - 4 garter stitch, 66p 6x4 elastic, - 4 garter stitch. I knitted 22cm in a straight line (it’s better to try it on a child’s head) and closed and sewed the hood in a straight line.
Sleeves
I cast on 24 stitches, knit with a 3x3 20cm rib, then evenly added 2 stitches in purl stripes. (10 stitches) = 34 stitches. I knit in stockinette stitch 8 cm. We make a sleeve cap. We close as for the armhole - 3,2,1p on both sides = 34-12 = 22p. We knit a couple of rows 22p. stockinette stitch and close. We sew in the sleeves. For planks, we cast on 38 stitches, knit 10 rows with an elastic band 1x1. Don't forget to make buttonholes. I have 5 pieces. That seems to be it. Yes, to all the calculations there are also edge loops (I didn’t take them into account in the description). The whole coat is crocheted in a circle - 1p. single crochet. 2p-1 double crochet, picot of 3 p.
The coat is knitted using 2 threads - grass + acrylic. Acrylic binding. Look like that's it. Good luck!
