Master class on making “Doll – amulet Zernovushka”

Caryopsis, Krupenichka, Buckwheat

History claims that the ancients saw the amulets as reliable support, protection and believed in the power of their magic. Many amulets of the ancient Slavs have survived to this day. The significance of the Zernovushka doll was rightfully great.

Previously, there was a tradition of giving Krupenichka as a housewarming gift to young families. This amulet helped the young housewife and served as a kind of blessing for the hearth, which had not yet gained full strength. The doll was placed where there was an abundance of food: on a beautiful kitchen shelf, a clean pantry or a food cupboard. Bereginya kept a vigilant eye on the owner's supplies and protected them from possible damage and unnecessary waste.

The amulet Zernovushka has several interesting names: Pea, Zernushka, Krupenichka, Grechishnitsa. Our ancestors loved it very much, as they considered it a stronghold of prosperity and material well-being. Therefore, we approached its creation intelligently and carefully.

The first thing women did when making Krupenichka was to prepare fabric for storing cereals. It was necessarily boiled with salt, then dried well. This was done to prevent the appearance of mold and bugs. The bag of cereal must be very good, since it must also protect against evil, love spells, and evil entities.

The Grain amulet was considered an attribute of fortune and family strength, so the best grain was given to her. The heavier the bag of cereal, the wealthier the family. The thin, sickly-looking Zernovka showed that the family was poor and everything was bad. For the outfit, the brightest, most beautiful rags, a red scarf, and beads were selected.

Every year, in the spring, the dolls were dismantled, the outfits were washed, new ones were sewn and saved until the new harvest. When autumn came, they assembled a new Bereginya and tried each time to make it better than the previous one, so that life would get better every year.

Origin and history of the amulet

The grain is a talisman whose history goes back to ancient times. It was customary among the Slavs to make a doll to attract wealth and good luck to the house. The grain represented the brownie's wife - the housewife - and occupied an honorable place in the hut - the red corner.

In another way she was called Krupenichka or Pea

The doll was kept and passed down from generation to generation. To charge the amulet with solar energy of prosperity, ripe wheat was placed inside the grain. Sometimes - buckwheat or oats, depending on the purpose of the amulet. By the appearance of the doll, guests judged the wealth of the owners: a densely stuffed Krupenichka meant wealthy people.

Sometimes a similar doll was created to pair with Zernovushka, only dressed in men's clothing and called the Rich Man. This is how a married couple of brownies appeared. Usually this helped improve everyday life and improve the relationship between husband and wife.

In ancient times, Krupenichka was given as a gift for the holiday of Kolyada, when they thanked the gods for a fruitful year. It was believed that the amulet was charged for a warm spring, heavy summer rains and large shoots in the fall. When sowing, the first grain was thrown into the ground from Krupenichka.

There is still a tradition of giving newlyweds a fat Zernovushka as a wedding gift. It is also customary to give a doll as a housewarming gift with wishes of prosperity and prosperity in the home.

How to make Zernovushka (first method)

It is better for the housewife to sew it herself. Today, at home, there are 3 ways to make a Zernovushka doll with your own hands. First you need to stock up on the necessary materials: good cereal, a sock, threads, a white cloth in the shape of a rectangle, colored cloth and a handkerchief.

You need to do everything correctly, so there are simple instructions:

  1. Fill a good clean sock with cereal and tie it so as not to spill anything. It is advisable to take large grains, for example, barley or oats.
  2. The end of the sock is pulled over with a thread, forming the head and body.
  3. The white material is folded in two and tied with thread at the ends to form handles. This piece is used to cover Krupenichka and focus on the neck.
  4. A kind of skirt is made from colored calico, and a scarf made of red fabric is tied on the head.

Master class on making a Krupenichka doll with your own hands

When making a Krupenichka doll with your own hands, you need to choose one of the cereals. It could be buckwheat, pearl barley, oats or millet.

Be sure to take whole, not crushed grains. Each type of cereal carries a certain message. For example, buckwheat and pearl barley are a source of satiety and a symbol of prosperity. Oatmeal gives you strength and improves your health. It is important to make the Krupenichka doll in one day, without postponing the work until later.

Tools and materials

When making the amulet, you cannot use piercing or cutting objects. The threads are not cut, but torn off by hand. Scissors are only acceptable for shaping clothing. All elements of the image are wound with threads.

To create a protective doll you will need:

  • white or light fabric for the bag;
  • cardboard to give it shape;
  • a piece of fabric for a scarf;
  • Double-sided tape;
  • lace;
  • red threads;
  • braid;
  • shirt fabric;
  • fabric for apron;
  • any cereal.

Any cereal is suitable for making a Krupenichka doll
. If you plan to decorate Krupenichka, you need to prepare suitable beads, laces, etc.

Stages of making a talisman

The work of creating a talisman is not difficult, but it requires care and full dedication. It’s better that no one distracts you. Making a doll step by step looks like this.

  1. A tube of the appropriate diameter is made from cardboard, the ends of which are connected with tape. This will be the template for the bag.
  2. The paper blank is wrapped several times with a light cloth. At one end the fabric is tied together as if forming a candy. You need to twist the thread to the right, making an even number of knots. The remaining thread is either broken or left as is.
  3. The cardboard template is pulled out and the bag is turned inside out. The inside is filled with cereal, not reaching the edge by about 4 cm. The free end is also tied with thread using the same technology.
  4. A piece of red cloth, with the wrong side up, is attached to the top of the bag. After this, it is tied with a thread, turning it outward.
  5. The fabric for the blanket is attached in a similar way, with the edges folded in on each side.
  6. When the caftan is ready, make a multi-layer apron. First, apply the largest piece of fabric, then two smaller ones. The technology is the same: the fabric is applied inside out, tied with thread and unfolded.
  7. Next, the headband is attached to the head by placing a scarf on her head. The remaining tips are hidden inside.
  8. The last stage will be belting the Krupenichka doll.

The grain is ready and waiting to be placed in the designated place or given to a loved one. The sizes of the bag and clothing may vary, depending on personal preference.

Second way

The second method is a master class on making a Zernovushka doll, it is a little more difficult.

You need to prepare:

  • white linen 24 by 21 cm;
  • colored fabric for a skirt 25 by 8.3 cm;
  • fabric of a different color for an apron 7.4 by 8.3;
  • a piece of knitwear or drape 56 by 8.4;
  • triangular chintz;
  • contrasting material;
  • ribbon;
  • dense threads and good grain.

This method is done step by step like this:

  1. The prepared linen fabric is folded in two and the side sections are sewn down.
  2. One of the sides is tied with a thread and turned inside out. It turned out to be a bag.
  3. This bag is filled with grain approximately three-quarters full. The top is tied, and the excess fabric is removed - this is the body.
  4. For the fabric for the skirt, you need to stitch the side sections, bend all the edges, put the skirt on Zernovushka, and secure it with thread.
  5. The apron can be elegantly decorated with ribbon, appliques, and all the edges can be sewn together.
  6. To make sleeves, a drape is suitable. You need to determine the middle of the strip and collect the fabric from both ends with a roller, but not to the top.
  7. The finished reel is attached to the back so that the roller handles are on the sides. The hands are attached with threads.
  8. A browband is made from chintz. It is tied like a bandana and the long edges are cut off. A scarf is tied on top. The long ends are not cut off, but tied around the neck.

The doll is ready. They put her in the best corner, and put money under her.

Best of all, if the Zernovushka doll is made with your own hands, it will resemble those that our ancestors made.

Activation and use of the amulet doll

Pick up the finished Krupenichka and talk to her. Tell the doll about yourself, your family and your desires. Be kind and affectionate with her - she is your protector. Place the amulet in the kitchen or living room. Among the Slavs, the contents of the amulet were updated annually. The base was made for a long time and, as a rule, was passed on from generation to generation.

When the fabric of the amulet wore out, they said goodbye to the doll. You cannot throw away a doll without a special ritual:

  • Listen to yourself. If you feel pity when you pick up a worn-out amulet, this means that it is too early to part with it. Update the doll's appearance and contents - it will still serve for some time.
  • If you feel grateful, then Zernovushka completed the task and attracted prosperity and satiety to the house. The time has come to say goodbye to her.
  • We disassemble the spent amulet into shreds. We break the threads. When disassembling, do not use sharp objects - everything is done manually. The components are betrayed to the elements: buried in the ground, thrown into water or burned in fire. Old threads and scraps cannot be used to create new grains.

In ancient times, such dolls were highly valued and took pride of place in the red corner. Receiving Krupenechka as a gift meant enlisting the support of the gods and living a comfortable life in warmth, prosperity and comfort.

Waldorf way

In order to make Zernovka using the Waldorf method, prepare the following materials: multi-colored fabric, light knitwear, some wool, good cereal, threads (wool), multi-colored threads, beads.

Scheme for making a grain doll:

  1. A circle 18 centimeters in diameter is cut out of the fabric. An oval 8 by 7 cm is cut out of light knitwear. The blanks are processed along the edge with a double thread using a “forward needle” seam. The indentation is made no less than 5 mm, stitches - no more than 2 mm.
  2. Grain is poured into the prepared skirt. Stuff the grains enough, otherwise the shape will not hold. The head needs to be stuffed with wool and the thread pulled tight. It turns out to be a well-filled ball.
  3. It is necessary to ensure that the strips of knitwear on the head do not lose their shape, since their distortion is contrary to the Waldorf tradition. The head is placed on the prepared body and both pieces are pulled together with thread.
  4. The skirt is hooked where the tie was. You should not take more than three grips at a time. Grab your head, moving 7 mm from the point of contraction. It is important to avoid tilting your head; it should look straight. The fabric on the face should be without wrinkles; they should be pulled back, where the hairstyle will hide all the errors.
  5. The next stage is decoration. Hair is formed from wool threads. They begin to sew them on from the center, one thread at a time, imitating real strands of hair. It is better to make them thick, without bald patches. You can take six hairs and sew them on both sides. The finished hair is tied into ponytails and decorated with bows. If desired, you can weave braids.
  6. The clothes are decorated with beads and brooches, the main thing is that the doll is elegant and really reminds of the family’s wealth.

Every housewife can make a grain doll with her own hands. This is a prototype of a housewife - a keeper of the hearth. Such a doll will be a good decoration, a reminder of the well-being and prosperity of the family.
