- fabric material, preferably cotton (two types are possible - for edging and base);
- lace or elastic band;
- chalk or marker;
- ruler;
- scissors;
- pins;
- sewing machine;
- iron.
Step by step instructions with photos:
Cutting values: base – 35x20 cm, 2 lines – 10x4.5 cm, a pair of ribbons 15 cm each.
Bend the base with the pattern inward. Sew along the length with an allowance line of 0.5 cm. Turn inside out and press with an iron.
We make folds: place the workpiece with the working seam towards the bottom, and with the raw cuts on the side. Step back 3.5 cm from the bottom, mark and draw a line horizontally. Move 2.5 cm up from it and repeat the mark.
Place a fold 1.5 cm deep and secure with needles. Make subsequent folds in the same way as the first, making sure that all fold lines match.
Sew the places for the side fastenings.
Attach elastic bands or laces to the top and bottom of the sides. Fold the finishing fabric strips in half, inside out, and iron. Attach the ribbon to the lace with the raw edges facing each other. Stitch with an allowance of 0.7 cm. Fold the strip over to the other side and stitch.
A similar craft can be made without a sewing machine. The main thing is the accuracy of the seam and sewing with a frequent, dense stitch.
Techniques for creating a mask
There are techniques for creating carnival masks that vary in complexity and labor intensity: from simple ones (where you just need to print and color a template) to more complex ones (with careful preliminary preparation, precise adherence to all stages of the technology):
- voluminous: made of paper, cut and glued in a certain way to create relief;
- using the cutting technique: twisted pieces of paper are glued side by side or in layers onto parts of the mask that imply volume;
- papier-mâché: a prepared mass of small torn particles of paper and glue is applied to the base or face, allowed to dry, then decorated;
- tatting: openwork knitted from thread with a special needle or shuttle and fastened with wire;
- decoupage: base decorated with glued napkins
